Greetings,

My hard drive is being a b**** again (see this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2579439/hard-drive-problems.html).

The above link will show you the previous thread that helped me fix the problem for several months.

As described in the link, my hard drive will randomly, and sometimes expected (when logging in, turning on the computer and opening Event Viewer I can commonly predict), will make a noise as if it has just powered on (even though it is on) and then the system will freeze for half a minute to a minute. When this happens I can still use a program that has loaded and doesn't need anything from the hard drive, but when it does need something it will freeze.

The solution before was to reseat the SATA cable or switch it around with another one; I chose to reseat it. For a while it worked perfectly; for four months the problem had only occurred once or twice. However, in the past week the problem has risen again. Four days ago, I switched around the SATA cables, swapping my DVD drive cable (which worked fine) for my hard drive cable; the solution was only temporary and now it is doing it again.

I know now that my hard drive is on its way out but I fail to see how it can work one moment without fail and then the next moment keep screwing up. I do plan on getting a 120GB SSD to put the OS on so the hard drive has a lighter work load for its remaining life - then, when I have the money, replace the hard drive with a new one. The potential solution could be replacing the SATA cable but I doubt it.

Any ideas on how to stop the problem, if possible, or extend my hard drive's lifespan a tad?

PS: If you need to know, my hard drive is a Seagate ST1000DM003 and I have had it, along with my computer, for a year and a half.

EDIT: About 9 months ago, I sent my PC to it's vendor for a warranty repair as my system powered on but failed to boot. That was solved and I have no problem with it anymore but, I think, during transport (as it was a 3rd party company who delivered it) it must have suffered some damage while in transit to and fro.

Hi,

first thing: do some backup unless you want to lose you data.
Using a defective hard drive is a time bomb and once it fails you will lose everything.
The problem with faulty hard drives is that they can last a while or fail soon. You never know.
I personally use hard disk sentinel trial to find out how bad the damage is.
You could do a chkdsk to repair errors that can be cause by corrupted files.

You cannot extend your hard drive life span. The more you use it, to more it is likely to fail.

I have already backed up my important files on my memory stick as I pretty much save all my important stuff on it.
