Is there a hard drive recovery that is reputable and actually works? My boyfriend has 2 external drives he needs to recover files from and wanted to know how he would go about doing it.

Are you asking for an app or a shop that specializes in data recovery? If the former, you can try Recuva or TestDisk but please keep in mind that your mileage can and will vary. As for the latter, you will need to mention where you're located.

A simple recovery would be to connect a HDD to the pc using a powered USB to sata adapter cable.
Then, just copy the relevant files/folders to the pc.

If the problem is that the HDD devices can not be read, then there are data recovery outfits that can likely recover files for you.
They are very expensive.

I would start with a SMART report from a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo. This will us the physical state of the drives.

BTW, were these drives dropped or otherwise physically abused?
