Hard Drive reduced to half size.

I tried to shrink the size of my D:\ drive partition in Windows Disk Management, to leave myself with unallocated space to use as a seperate drive partition.
This failed to create the space I needed at first, and repeated attempts returned the error "parameter is incorrect".
Then, while checking disk management, I saw that the graphical display still said that the partition was 931.51 GB (the full size of the drive), but the text based readout said that the partition only had a 419.87 GB capacity, and when I right click I am only given options to change the drive letter and shrink the volume, both of which return the "parameter is incorrect" error. This 419GB capacity is the value given by Windows Explorer, and the space I can save files to.
How can I return the drive partition to the previous value?
N.B. Disk Management is not giving me the option to format the drive.

That is part of the problem, yes.
