Hard drive self monitoring...

Hi all,
Today, when I turned on my computer, i saw this message:

"Hard Drive SELF MONITORING SYSTEM has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard drive problem"

Does anyone know what it is?

Yes, it's a SMART error. Get a 3rd party utility like speedfan or hdtune that can read the smart status from the drive.

In the mean time backup your drive as it may be failing.

yes in your bios you can disable SMART reporting. and your hard drive could go on working for years but dont say the thing didn't warn ya when it fails.

You don't need a backup, any more that you NEED to insure your house or wear a seat belt. But if you drive fails, it's on you that you lost all your files.

it could have a fualt or it could be hot because you havn't dusted out the case in 5 years. unless you get the error code read to see what it is you basically have a ticking time bomb.

I would try CrystalDiskInfo to read the s.m.a.r.t DATA

HDtune(listed above. I do not recommend Speedfan for this as HDtune is much faster and lighter without needing to install a driver(giveio)on the system) can also read s.m.a.r.t and run a drive error scan. You can use the FREE non pro one. If you try pro DO NOT DO A WRITE BENCHMARK.

I am having this exact problem, on a dell running win 7, i have another internal harddrive that i can moved everything to, but how can i do that if i cant get windows to start?? please help!
