I have a 2 tb 3,5" hitachi sata drive. Then yesterday it just stopped functioning.

Drive spins up okay, head moves (double checked), the pcb has no burn mark too, but it can't be recognised by any OS (we're talking windows 7 and 10, ubuntu, Ubuntu mate, arch and MacOS).

Bios also can't detect this.

Any idea how to fix this ?

Solution
Opened it, wo proper "clean room"=assume drive is done for.

A few things can happen to it:

BAD SPINNER, the bearing has failed, try to rotate by hand and if it doesn't spin freely, makes noise, that's it.

HEAD CRASH, U May or may not notice physical damage to the r/w heads.

CONTROLLER FAILED, U may notice dark/burn components, possible to replace.
Have you tried known working power and data cables?

Next, try Hitachi's diagnostic software.

Do be aware that anything you do may cause further damage and/or loss of data.

i have no pc near me. I use that drive in my enclosure(s). I have 2 enclosures, a usb 3.0 and usb 2.0. Have tried changing and ordering new cables, trying from different plugs, but none helps.

Would you able to assume where the problem is, given my explanation above ?

I am new here, i don't know how to quote your answer from my phone. I could do it before because i got a notification in my email, but i din't have yours.

USAFRet : i'm pretty sure it's not the cables, nor the enclosures.

I know the rules that "if you don't back up your files, you don't have them". However, this is my backup drives. My main drive broke a month ago and i haven't had the time to purchase and reclone the data (bust at work).

I'm hoping someone would elaborate the problem with my drive. Even if it's a 100% dead drive, i still want to know the cause

I am always aware of the risk, and yes, i did open it.
However, i took the best approach i could do.
My sister has a big unused wardrobe. So i cleaned the inside part, put the drive there and got a chair for me to sit and started starring at every piece of the drive, both inside and outside. Multimeter showed no sign of short. The drive platted spins fast and the head moves normally (i guess, judging by most video i saw online)

Even if the drive is already broken and unfixable, i would still love to know the best assumption as to why it's broken.

I am not a pro but from what i read online, PCB is not the cause here.

Could it be virus or some kind ?

Thank you for taking the time to reply this thread!
