My hard drive just suddenly stopped showing up today. I get to control panel but not sure what anything means from there.. I don't now which "drive" or driver software is linked to the hard drive so please basic steps will be appreciated.

Solution
Ah yes, maybe the OS decided to hide it, I've come across this long ago and used a utility in 'Advanced System Care' to fix it, though you can do it through windows system too
Are you still using XP?

go to registry editor> Run
type and enter> regedit
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
single click on the last path in left pane (Explorer)
In the left pane, see if 'NoViewOnDrive' is there, if so delete it
You may need to reboot, not sure, may jsut work off the bat

If squeemish with the registry editor, try this>
go to> Run
type gpedit.msc
click ok
in the tree in the right pane, go to>
User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer

In that...
Windows has a tool called Disk Management, in vista/win7 you can type and search for it in the start menue, or in XP, go to >
Run
type: compmgmt.msc
a window opens and you will see Disk Management
If you drive is connected, it should show it there, you could try renaming the drive 'Letter' to fix it
If not, check if the HardDisk connectors to the motherboard/from the power supply have come loose

If it wasnt connected he wouldnt be able to boot so all he has to do is re map the drive.

see the checkboxes are correct to not needed hide drives
