This is somewhat recent. The drive was fine 2 months ago. Then out of nowhere it starts having issues when moving files to it from my ssd. It copies fine for the first minute or two, then I get an error message, 0x800701b1 'a device which does not exist was specified'. I tried looking the issue up but can't find anything quite like my problem. After this happens, I can't do anything with the drive other than browse the folder i most recently tried moving. Can't delete, move, or copy stuff. Older folders don't open, again saying the device does not exist. Trying to scan/repair it gives a similar error. The only fix is restarting the pc, at which point it's accessible until I again try to move/copy files to it. Any ideas?

Sounds like there is a bad sector in your HDD.

"When you try to access a file, you get some hard drive read errors, mentioning file corruption or others, it may suggest bad sector. Moreover, if it takes a pretty long time to open a file or you encounter blue screen during reading, it must refer to that there is bad sector on this drive. "

Your drive may have bad sectors or might be your drive got corrupted. Drive failure can happen due to various reasons. Before you do anything else I suggest you to check the health status of your drive using the diagnostic tool. It will make you confirm the issue with your drive.
I've used 2 diagnostic tools but nothing seems to be wrong with it. Guess I'll just have to get a new one.

I am also having this problem. But with a newly bought hard drive. Have you fixed the problem? If yes, how? Thank you!

I would return the drive. Otherwise zero fill it and perform a full surface scan. This may retire any bad sectors, but then you will see a non-zero value in the SMART Reallocated Sector Count attribute.

Thank you for your suggestion. But after tireless hours of searching I found out that booting the pc to Normal boot using cmd and msconfig would fix my problem. I don't know how it is connected to the drive freezing but it worked. Also, SMART Reallocated Sector Count showed 68. But still, Thank You!
