Hard Drive suddenly not recognised?

Good day,

So my cable management is a bit crap, and after procrastinating I decided to finally make use of the holes to put cables through in my case, and tidy things up a bit.

I unplugged my two GPUs, Motherboard power and a few other small bits and pieces, re-routed them and plugged everything back in. I did not touch the drives.

Yet when I got everything together and plugged back in, after POSTing I got the message 'Reboot and Select proper Boot device'

The drive in question is solely used for the operating system, and is a Samsung 840Evo SSD. My Mobo is a Gigabyte Z87X-D3H.

Here's what I've tried already:

It will not show up in BIOS or the Boot Menu. It's like it doesn't exist, since moving a few cables..

-I considered that I had perhaps knocked the cables while moving others around, so I checked to make sure they were still securely in, and they were.

My storage drive and optical drive both still appear on BIOS and Boot Menu.

I've tried moving it to a different SATA port on the Mobo, nae such luck.

I have also tried a different cable, and still I'm getting nothing.

I'm somewhat reluctant to accept that the drive has died from reshuffling cables around, because it worked perfectly beforehand! Has this ever been known to happen?

Any assistance would be great thanks,
-Lewis

Hello, Lewis!

Good job on the troubleshooting steps. What is the model of your drive?
I'd suggest to try plugging the HDD on another computer and see if it gets recognized there.
I think that the motherboard firmware might need to be updated and most probably the SATA drivers.
You can check these things out on your motherboard manufacturer's website.

Hope this helps you. Keep me posted!

Hi, thanks for the reply.

My next step was to try it in another computer, but I've not got another desktop to try it in, and all my flatmates have been either sleeping or out since this happened! 😛

So once I've got it in another computer - if it's not just dead - could you briefly explain how I'd go about installing the two things you mentioned. I take it you mean to put them on the motherboard?

The drive in question is a Samsung 840 EVO SSD, and it's given me no trouble since I got it a year ago. I'm just a bit confused as to what's happened since I literally opened the case for five minutes while I re-routed some cables around the holes in my case 🙁

Thanks anyway :)

Hi again, Lewis!

Make sure the SATA controllers are set to AHCI if they are not already.
In order to do the update, you need to consult with your motherboard website to check what is the version of your BIOS, since you cannot boot to Windows, you can update the BIOS through DOS or from the BIOS itself. I'd suggest to check out this link with steps and ideas on how do that: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/pc-upgrades/3428662/how-update-your-bios-in-ten-steps/?pn=1
I get why you would be confused, SSDs should be much more reliable. I'd recommend to check out the SSD firmware and see if there are any updates on it as well. You can check our SSD manufacturer website and use their utilities to update it. That is, if you get it detected on one of your flat mate's computers.
Among the other things that can be done to troubleshoot this, is enable the hot plug/swap on your SATA port: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/941

Hope this helps you. Keep me posted! :)

Hi again. Apologies for late reply, some worker decided to cut the internet cable for our entire area, and this is the first time I've breathed in fresh internet for 3 days! 😛

I had a play around again the following day, finally getting a hold of my flatmate he let me use his computer to test the drive on, etc etc. To cut a long story short, the drive works, and it was a faulty SATA power line coming from my PSU. I switched the drive to the other power line (that was powering my other two working drives) and everything booted perfectly!

Thanks for all your help, I've upvoted your replies and sent you 60 cookies in the post :)
