So I have this 1TB HDD from Seagate (ST1000DM003) and was wondering if I could recover the data from it? It was working fine for a while until one day (recently) until I had an issue on my pc, which is in another thread, where I chkdsked and checked the device health with a third party program (CrystalDiskInfo) both the chkdsk and program said it was fine, no errors or corruption and 83% healthy. But then I noticed the other day it was missing from my explorer, so I went into format/create partitions and it said “initialise”, after googling it seemed like initialise removes all the data so I decided to do the reasonable thing and put it in a sata + power to USB adapter, unfortunately nothing came up but it isn’t perfect so I thought I’ll try out it in a spare PC I had (Optiplex 990), and it still wasn’t detected, it doesn’t show up in bios or the format thing now (weird since it did on the original pc?) but still vibrates/spins and has no physical damage. Is there anything I can do?

To help with some suggestions:
  • Yes the sata cable works
  • No it’s not in bios
  • There is no physical damage
  • Yes I tried another PC + an adapter on a seperate laptop

is there anything I can do to recover the data? I saw on YouTube you can take the needle off the disk to recover your data (then never use the drive again) but that seems to only be for drives with a spinning issue(? I could be wrong).

Any suggestions or help would be great! Thankyou

Solution
OK...as long as it has wall power + USB.

If the drive is not seen at all in the OS, then it is likely dead.
This is why we stress backups so much.

What is the specific adapter you used?
I plugged it into the Optiplex with a sata + power that was already working on another drive, and the USB adaptor was uh… im not really sure. Probably a Chinese model? Here’s a pic, View: https://imgur.com/a/ckQg5Il
it has its own power adaptor, it has worked for old hard drives we’ve tested but obviously I wouldn’t trust it with my life haha, hence why I also tried it in the optiplex 990.
