I currently have a ssd for my os and most used games but I figured the ssd wont cover all my files as I plan on video editing and gaming a lot. I'm currently looking at two hard drives the seagate 3tb ( Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache) or a western digital hard drive (black i figure) however the seagate is cheaper in terms of space but I'm hearing a lot of horror stories of them failing after the warranty. As I tend to worry a lot can someone tell me which will be a better investment for my intended use? preferably explain the reasoning behind your choice as well.

I know that any hard drive is not as bullet proof, but I want to avoid dealing with a dead hdd and/or lost files.

Thanks for your time!

In particular, the Seagate 3TB has had major reliability issues.

There are multiple other drives. Seagate or WD 2TB.
The WD Black in any size would work well.

any idea why the 3 tb is so failure prone? (just curious) also, between a the 2 tb seagate or a 2 tb wd blue/black which would you recommend?

No idea. But there was a report from BackBlaze a couple of years ago calling that particular drive out for an unusually high fail rate.
Now...does that roll over to drives sold today? No idea. But the taint remains.
