Hard lock ups

Alright I've finally come to ask for help. A friend of mine gave me an older pc and I've been trouble shooting random hard lock ups and I'm stumped. I have run furmark I have run mem test I have tested CPU all seemed to pass fine. I was getting the crashes in Windows 7. So I reformatted hard drive and tried to do a clean install. But when partitioning the drive I also got hard lock ups running outside os on a cd. I have cleaned and reseated all components and nothing has helped. I've also used a different hdd still getting lock ups.
Specs:
Mobo Asua p5q turbo
Intel e6750 dual core
500w psu
Amd Radeon 6950gpu
Any more info needed let me know

One possibility is the CPU or sometimes RAM is faulty. Little chance for a PSU to be faulty or not sufficient.

There are a few possibilities; PSU failing, graphics card failing, and the motherboard itself.

The easiest two of the three if you have spares is the PSU and graphics card. Since you've already eliminated the OS and you have crashing occurring outside the OS, it has to be a hardware related fault.

You could try resetting the BIOS and see if that helps, maybe there is something funky with the BIOS settings. You could also see if there is a BIOS update, however if he's been on this BIOS for a long time without problems, this is a long shot.

The psu is pretty new and it was running with a 350w when I got it and I upgraded. It was used but in very good condition. Bios has been reset to defaults and updated. If it helps when I was running memtest I would get memory errors with any ram in the second dimm slot but all 4 sticks worked fine in the other three slots. I ran furmark when the os was kind of working and let it run for some time ran excellent no crash during testing

So you say you got memory errors with an RAM in the second slot. Do you have all four slots populated normally? Or do you run it dual channel?

It had all 4 populated before. But would not boot. So I ran memtest found the slot to cause errors now I have 3 sticks in the three good slots

I'm starting to lean to a motherboard problem now. If it's got one bad DIMM slot it certainly makes it suspect.

However I'm betting you don't have another LGA775 Core 2 compatible motherboard lying around to test with. So it becomes a process of elimination. You could try a different PSU and graphics card. If the problem isn't resolved after trying those two, then you are looking at a failing motherboard. You've already eliminated a storage problem and an OS / driver issue. All your RAM is fine when used in every slot but the second.

I think I'm gonna try grabbing a new mobo and CPU im leaning towards bad mobo as well
