I own a HP pavillion 754n desktop it already has an 80 gb Ide harddrive
installed. I want to add a Maxtor / DiamondMax 10 / 200GB / 7200 / 8MB /
ATA-133 / EIDE / OEM / Hard Drive and Im wondering of its compatibility. I
dont know wheather my pc is ata/100 or ata/133does that even matter. So would
i be able to use this hardrive without buying a card sata or ata card? or
would i have to buy it

Thanks

Exactly how competent are you with PCs?

If you are good then you can manage the installation of a PCI ATA-133 card,
and the software required to make it accessible to BIOS in order for BIOS to
recognise the new drive.

The next problem comes with the various drive size limitations: these could
be BIOS / Motherboard restrictions or the various versions of XP that are
around. SO let me suggest that you don't bother with anything over 80Gb
unless you plan to replace the PC in the near future.

If you are not very competent and plan to use the drive for storage of your
personal data, buy a USB external case with a Hard Drive installed or buy
them separately and save a few dollars. This can simply attach to the PC and
you get the benefit of being able to take it along should you need to copy
big files across to other computers.

Speck page. I would be concerned about the power supply.

The new drive will be backward compatible with the HP. Whether you can use
the full capacity depends on the bios and if you have Win XP SP1 or SP2
installed. If you want to use it as an extra drive then windows should
detect it as a new drive letter, if you want to replace the 80G drive then
you need to look at how you would transfer the data.
The new drive will run as fast as the IDE controller will allow.

hope that helps
