Harddrive light comes on and computer gets extremely slow or freezes

My computer freezes or gets extremely slow and i noticed the hhd light is coming on bright red and staying on when this is happening then it cuts off and the system moves a little faster.

Things i tried:
I changed the hard drive thinking this was causing the problem it wasn't
Re installed windows 7 wasn't the problem

Things to know:
my generic power supply made an extremely loud noise and began to smoke about 5 months ago and i changed it my system then worked as normal after

When i use Google chrome sometimes the tabs get all white and then it will come back on to what i was watching after 2-3 seconds also the mouse lags when i click things like the start menu when i click it it will light up then after 3 sec then the start menu will pop up

When i click on a program it takes around 5 seconds to load (Micorsoft word 2010)

As im writing this the red light came on and the typing lags i wirte out a whole sentence and it take 2 to 3 seconds to type out.

My graphics card if i were to take it out and then put it on it doesnt come on until i jiggle it.

My computer screen randomly just came off and my pc started blinking this time it was the power button blue light.

Your system is on the low side for RAM, and I suspect you are using the HDD as a swap file.

I would try defragmenting the hard drive, and a flash drive for ReadyBoost.

In the end, the best solution is 8 GB ram, and an SSD to fix this.
