Question Has anyone bought a 'refurbished' graphics card from New Egg?

I'm going to have to buy another graphics card as last summer my wife [who has dementia] knocked over my old pc [which is now hers].

Ever since then the PC will randomly shut down. It might run all day just fine [watching movies, playing internet games] then just shut down. Then its hard to start back up. It will almost get to the main Windows screen then shut down. I have to keep restarting it until it goes into system repair which takes around 15 minutes to run, then the PC will shut down and usually restart. Of course some times it will take a few tries even after the system restore.

At times the PC will run any videos really slow, for which after waiting several minutes will usually clear up.

The reason I suspect the card [AMD 6750xp] is that after trying system restore, disk cleanup, and defraging the system, I tried to download and install the newest drivers for the card. After downloading the drivers they were unable to install.

So, at this point my wife's PC is her world as it keep her entertained through out the day, and with summer coming up I'm worried the card might just die all together.

My plan is to upgrade the existing card in my PC, and install my card into my wife's PC. However, the prices of cards are through the roof, and even my old card is still around the same price as when I bought it in 2022.

I saw the refurbished cards on New Egg, and wondered if anyone had any experience with them as they are a bit cheaper than a new card.

Don’t have any experience with refurbished cards, but I’d advise you to determine the cause of the issue before buying a new or refurbished GPU.

Maybe something got knocked loose or some other part got damaged when the pc fell over.

The drivers for the gpu being unable to install could point to any number of problems, not necessarily anything wrong with the gpu.

Maybe check the gpu by placing it in your pc to see if it’s faulty before replacing it.

If it is a mechanical harddrive it could have a bad sector caused by a shock which could have corrupted the os no amount of recover will save it before going to spend money on a new GPU.

Download windows 11 from Microsoft and make a usb install. ( Not a iso)
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

Get a cheap 128 SSD. And put the os on it and try installing the drivers and see if it happens again. Remove all existing drives just keep the vanilla drive installed.

Also when making the vanilla windows 11 untick for this pc as your making a whole new os vanilla.

Definitely verify that the internal components are all properly seated/attached. Your issue very well could be a loose/dislodged GPU or other component.

Regarding refurbished GPUs, I have purchased (open-box as well) in the past. Really no issues with any of those purchases from Newegg. Just make sure you understand the return policy for the item.

The symptoms you describe, especially the Windows repair part, sound like a drive issue. HDDs are very sensitive to shock. Did you try to check the drive's health? Like this:

A defective GPU will not cause Windows to try to repair itself when trying to reboot after a crash. And unless the error when trying to install the graphics driver was specifically that it could not detect the graphics card, the problem has likely nothing to do with the card itself, but more with Windows. As others said, you should try to put the card in your own computer first. You could also install your own card into your wife's computer (if the problem still happens, then buying another card will be useless).
