Solution
That is not going to work right.

Orange is desgned for 1 center speaker and for the subwoofer (not a 2.1 subwoofer but a 5.1 or completely separate one).
Trying to plug a 2.1 system into that orange port, the 2.1 is not going to know what to make of the signal.
Not to mention that nothing will output from it if not playing a 5.1/7.1 audio file.

If you are trying to setup a fake 4.1 setup then plug the 2.1 (fronts) into green, and the 2.0 (rears) speakers into black. Then configure both your windows and realtek audio panels for that.
If you simply want 4 channel stereo then it will be easier just to use an rca splitter cable and use the green port

As I said earlier, the rear speakers will ONLY work when playing a file that has...

Solution
above where it sais analog and back panel on the right
theres a feature that sais "ignore front panel detection"

and adjusted decibels to 3+ on both front speakers...

i need a splitter cable indeed from radioshack

but anyways

any tips for... keeping volume in the middle to keep the speaker amps cool

Your best bet to keep speaker volume down is to ensure the Windows volume is cranked to 100% and what ever source you are playing has its audio out set to 100%. You can increase +3 db, etc like you are saying, but it's very easy to start distorting it.
