Have I damaged my CPU/motherboard?

While installing my new PC, I, without knowing, placed my I7 CPU in the wrong position into the motherboard socket. It seemed to fall straight into the socket, but when I moved the frame (idk what it's called) over the CPU (I didn't push the small handle to lock the frame in), I could hear a grinding sound and instantly stopped. I checked the CPU and it was shifted from the position I placed it, most likely because it wouldn't fit in the spot I put it in. I checked the motherboard pins, and at a glance I didn't see any bent pins. I correctly positioned the CPU, and it fit in normally without any resistance. Should I worry about any damage?

Impossible to say for sure. All you can do is closely examine the CPU and socket to tell for sure. I've heard of people doing some minor damage to their CPU and everything works normally, or sometimes there are minor problems with the CPU's performance, or sometimes it's completely dead. Ok. If there were bent pins, would the CPU still be able to easily fall in the socket like mine did after I fixed it?

Yes, a bent pin wouldn't obstruct the CPU from being installed. My suspicion is that your stuff is probably fine, but like I said the only way to know for certain is inspection and trial.

This is a new build that I will be attempting to power on soon, I'm cooling it with a Kraken X41 watercooler. I suspect that the grinding sound was just the CPU sliding on the motherboard pins. Do you agree with my suspicion or do you suspect something else happens? Like I said, I will be powering on the PC soon. If there are bent pins on the motherboard, will it damage other components if powered on?
