Have rebooted my pc & disc drive does not work properley

Hello,
I have rebooted my PC for the first time in 4 years and is all working brill, except for a lot of cd's that I need in like Microsoft Publisher etc, P.A.F 5.2 etc.. don't seem to work.
Can anyone help?

You left the computer on for 4 years, exposed to power glitches, hacking and just plain OS glitches. You never installed software requiring registration ? This definitely can bring a lot of problems. Early chinese CD Drives used to burn out in a short lifetime, get another drive ?
Do a full scan of OS, including spyware and rootkits.
