Ive been having a few issues with windows 10 and programs on windows 10 and I would like to know if anyone has any helpful tips:

1.) In my network settings, under change adapter settings, I have over 30 lan ports.. apparently. Is this just a windows 10 thing because Ive never seen something like this before.

2.) Avast anti virus will trigger a .net framework error when a banner add comes down on the screen. Im not sure yall can tell me how to fix this but it would nice to know its not just me.

3.) Im using an hp omen 15 laptop (the original one) and every now and again the system will freeze up on me for no determinable reason. I cant find a correlation between the events. It doesnt seem to matter what I have open or how much or little I am doing, but the system will just hang randomly. Ive updated all my drivers with drive booster and Ive updated my graphics chip. Ive run malware and anti virus scans and Ive come up with nothing. These hangs are super annoying when gaming (obviously) and Ive been searching for a fix.

4.) Finally I have two updates in hp update utility that wont apply. One is a bios update and the other a bluetooth. I really want the bios update to see if that will resolve my hanging above but I cant seem to get ti to apply. Ive tried directly downloading from hp but the version on thier site is an older one.

Thanks for the help. Any information here will be great!

Solution
1) that is unusual, I just see two. This might help: https://iihelp.iinet.net.au/Resetting_Network_Adapter_(Winsock_Reset)#toc_0

2) what are ads? oh yeah, thats what all the blank space on side of screen is meant for... Are you using edge as you can add adblock to it now, whereas all other browsers should be using ublock origin.

I can't help directly as I don't use avast. Maybe blocking ads will make error stop.

4) what version bios is on the updater as it seems odd its newer than the one on the site

1) Certainly updating/reinstalling the driver for your wireless adapter will do you some good. It seems that the driver you're currently using isn't compatible with Windows 10 or it's corrupted. So follow the link (or use a quick Google search) Colif suggested.

2) Uninstalling Avast and never using it again would be your best option. Avast has become like Norton, in it puts more effort into getting you to use their products than putting effort into defending your system from virus'. If you still want anti-virus software other than the standard Windows Defender (which is automatically installed with Windows), some good free ones would be:
- Super Anti-Spyware Free Edition
- MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (Free Edition also)
But it basically seems that Avast is making you view ads that you don't need (and probably don't want to) see.

3) These hangs are certainly not Windows related. It really depends on how long you've had the laptop for and what you usually use it for (e.g. putting it under a lot of stress via something like heavy gaming or video editing). However, to me that sounds like it's a hard-drive fault. I'm not sure about your laptop specifically (again, a quick Google search will reveal enough information), but you should be able to change the hard-drive for a newer one easily enough IF it's what is failing. If it's not the hard-drive it's probably the graphics card over-heating. So check the temperature of your laptop whenever it freezes, that may help diagnose the problem. Other than that I can't help too much more with the current description of your problem. You should probably consider doing some tests and experiments to see if you can get it to freeze on purpose to find the true cause of the problem.

4) This update probably won't fix your hanging issues, however it is always a good idea to keep your BIOS up to date (although not usually necessary unless your motherboard is fairly new). Again, I would recommend just uninstalling HP utility programs as they're not necessary and they slow down your system quite a bit (especially when booting into Windows from a shut-down state). However, if you really want to keep the HP programs, then maybe reinstall the update utility you're using and try the update once more.

Also, delete/uninstall the drive booster and any automatic driver updater utility (obviously besides the HP one you're using) as they're usually virus' as well. This may also help with the frequency of the hanging if the problem is hard drive related.

Malwarebytes isn't antivirus, it fights malware, not viruses. there is some cross over but the two things aren't the same. The other you listed isn't either. You still need AV and malware protection, you can't just use one (unless you use bitdefender which blocks malware as well). Avast isn't that bad, it just tries to sell things to you even after you get the paid version. Defender is better than nothing but every other free AV is better than defender.

Updating bios helps if PC is playing up. If it has new drivers that are requesting services it doesn't understand it can cause issues.

1) I read over the winstock methods and will give that a try this weekend. I have too much work to do on my laptop right now to deal with an adapter problem if something happens to go wrong.

2.) Nah they arent adds on chrome they just appear on your desktop sometimes trying to sell to you. I had 2 or 3 come down in the past few hours and they didnt trigger a .net error so maybe its something else. I tried to extract an error report last time but couldnt make heads or tails of it. If I get it up again Ill post the error and what I can dig out of it and maybe you or someone can tell me whats causing it.

4.) I checked the bios versions and the webpage one was, in fact, newer. Im a bit dyslexic so just an honest mistake. I downloaded the bios update and It did actually run this time but it appears to have that particular bios update blocked on my pc. If this is why the bios update on the utility wont run, its really weird that its being recommended for me in the first place.

I think im just going to stick with avast. Most of the paid stuff is spyware and I have to many pcs to go with anything that isnt free.

The hanging can occur in a game, opening a program, or even just changing a chome tab. So there is no similarities that I can tell from the events. Its making it really hard to pinpoint the problem. Im going to check the heat like the other individual advised.

Im going to attempt to see the temps when it hangs again but Ive never felt my laptop get hot, even under heavy gaming. Hangs happen when just switching chrome tabs sometimes so I really dont think its heat but Ill check.

Its not the hard drive. I have a nvme drive installed on this model but that is my bad I should have posted my specs.

I had just updated my drivers not that long ago and this is nothing new (since I got the computer). It doesnt seem to affect anything but Its just annoying to see it all in menus and settings. Colif showed me that winstock method and Ill try that when I can.

Avast is a great program. Its annoying but great. Its nothing like norton. Norton was super heavy on your cpu and extremely invasive. Avast is lightweight, free, and still very accurate. The banner adds are annoying but its a small price to pay for free antivirus for every pc in my my family (8 of them). Like I said in my other reply it might not be because of avast anyway (hopefully).

Also driver booster is very repeatable. I wouldnt leave it installed on your pc as it will go checking and installing updates whenever it wants but its very good as an occasional use to get all your driver updates at once. Without some sort of utility (drive booster or the hp one) its a huge labor to check for drivers for every individual part in your pc every now and again.

Fair enough if you're happy with what you've got, better not go changing anything major. However those ads that you're getting on your desktop and such is definitely some form of adware on your PC. So I'd recommend at least downloading one of the free programs I suggested and make sure Avast hasn't missed anything. It's always good to have more than 1 or 2 different programs for maximum coverage.

From what you're describing it doesn't sound like it's much of a heat problem then. Probably not a storage device problem either. What exactly happens when your PC hangs? Does it just give you a black screen forcing you to make a hard-reboot? Or does it go into a blue screen of death? Or does it automatically just reboot for you?

Basically now all we can do is hope that there isn't anything seriously wrong with your hardware. If this was to happen with my desktop PC, I'd probably go straight into assuming that it's got something to do with the power supply or my connection to the mains. So I don't know if you've tried this already, but maybe whenever you can just use the power coming from the wall instead of using your battery power, as if this stops the hanging then there may be something wrong with your battery and may just be an easy solution of getting that replaced.

When the pc hangs I just cant click on anything. Videos or games will freeze but the audio continues to play fine. I just cant click or interact with anything. No crashes. No black screens. Just a frozen screen with audio still functioning. Skype calls will still function too. Im able to hear and respond. It rather odd

That is quite strange. So that means it obviously has nothing to do with a lot of your components. The only piece of hardware that can cause something like this is your graphics card. So this probably isn't a good thing to hear.

There are a few things to consider doing. One of them is install a GPU-temperature monitor that displays some text on your monitor showing you it's current temperature, and just take note of how high it can get. It kind of sounds like your graphics card is over heating, and then as it's not getting cooled enough (and your BIOS is probably not configured to halt your system when temperatures get too high), it just stops all together.

Another possibility is that one of your cables is either damaged or slightly disconnected. Or you could have the really simple problem of your graphics drivers being incompatible with something, however that is very unlikely since you clearly keep your drivers up to date.

So I advise you to begin monitoring your graphics card temperatures (and even other temperatures, such as your CPU and motherboard - if your PC has motherboard temperature sensors) and see if there is any correlation between the hanging and the GPU temperature. If there isn't anything you can notice with the temperatures, then maybe it'll be a good idea to open up the bottom of your laptop (there are plenty of guides on how to do this online, and you can probably find a HP specific one for your model) and double check the fans are working properly and aren't blocked by any dust or debris, and make sure all of your cables are connected properly and nothing looks wrong (being careful about the electricity and static charges damaging you and your laptop).
