Question Games keep crashing - - I'm desperate for a fix ?

I have been getting CTD's on my PC when playing games (usually after 10-45 minutes of playing) and very occasional BSODs (typically when using a web browser heavily or right after exiting a game) after installation of a new CPU, RAM sticks, motherboard, and PSU. This started happening about two weeks ago when I installed the aforementioned upgrades. Most of the crashes involve the error 0xc0000005 (Access violation) which led me to believe that there was some sort of RAM problem, but I no longer believe that to be the case because it still happens even with two different sets of RAM sticks. I have not enabled XMP/ECHO at any time or overclocked the CPU or GPU at any time.

This is made even more odd given how I sent the computer to a friend's house to repair it and install new components, and he played one of the games that has been crashing for 3 hours with no problems. He also said that the flickering issue was not occurring. All of the components being used when he was playing games are the same ones currently installed on my PC.

Furthermore, when using Chrome or another web browser and watching a video, the screen will typically flash black for a second before coming back. Given that this started happening at around the same time as the game crashes, I believe that the two are related. Turning off GPU hardware acceleration or setting the ANGLE setting to OpenGL from DirectX fixes the issue, leading me to believe that there may be some sort of problem with the GPU. This would be odd, since I have been using this GPU since December 2024 with no problems until the installation of the new components.

Furthermore under the Events tab in Device Manager on my GPU, there are these two details that may be relevant:

"Driver Management has concluded the process to add Service nvlddmkm for Device Instance ID PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_2705&SUBSYS_471019DA&REV_A1\4&D0BDF66&0&0009 with the following status: 0."

"Driver Management has concluded the process to add Service NVDisplay.ContainerLocalSystem for Device Instance ID PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_2705&SUBSYS_471019DA&REV_A1\4&D0BDF66&0&0009 with the following status: 0."

Things I've tried to do to solve the problem:
DDU the GPU drivers and reinstall them directly from NVIDIA's website. (have done this many times)
Turn the GPU to maximum performance in NVIDIA settings.
Adjust TDR Delay time in registry
Update BIOS version
Set virtual memory pagefile size to 48000 MB (1.5X the size of my RAM)
Made a clean install of Windows (twice)
Swapped out RAM stick pair for a different RAM stick pair
Swapped out motherboard for a different motherboard

Sadly none of it has solved the problem.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Swapped out motherboard for a different motherboard
Did you reinstall the OS after the motherboard swap?

Made a clean install of Windows (twice)
Installing the OS in offline mode? Removing all drives except the one you wished to install the OS onto?

Update BIOS version
For the sake of relevance, please state the BIOS version for your motherboard.

Out of curiosity, which driver version are you working with? Have you tried 566.36? Also when using DDU, you're advised to remove all GPU drivers(intel, AMD and Nvidia) in Safe Mode, then manually install the driver in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator.

Yes

Not sure about offline mode but I installed Windows from a flash drive. I only have one storage drive (an SSD) on my computer

BIOS Version is F32 for Gigabyte B650M Gaming Plus Wifi

I haven't tried that specific version but I did try a version from August 2024 (the one installed when Windows reinstalled) and the current one. I did go into safe mode to use DDU, unplugged my Ethernet wifi, and installed the software from the normal mode. (I am not sure about running as administrator since it asks for user account control anyway)

I uninstalled Nvidia AND Amd drivers (to get rid of integrated graphics drivers) in DDU in safe mode then ran the Nvidia installer as administrator in normal mode. The Youtube flicker issue is still present so it doesn't seem to have solved the problem unfortunately.

1. make sure that the gpu cable is housed correctly and isnt being pushed out see below

this can occur and cause flickering

https://preview.redd.it/is-it-bad-i...bp&s=66622a965c7b69fc7a15312c9f1dc073b039b86e

secondly turn of gpu acceleration from display settings under graphics this can effect some games

turn down the memory to 5200 speed is advertised max speed for that cpu there isnt a guarantee that it will work at the advertised 6000 speed unless you check the board manufacturers compatibility list which isnt a guarantee either but it is better guide.

another option to see if it is a configuration issue or hardware issue would to be load on a linux distro to a USB live environment (running live off the usb - not installed on the system) that has the nvidia proprietary drivers pre-installed and then run a game (just make sure you choose one that is linux compatible via wine/proton or native). Use something like balena etcher to create the usb boot drive. then choose the usb on startup via the bios.

you'll quickly find out if you need to go down rabbit holes on windows settings/configs or if it is a hardware issue. if it runs fine then you can go back and try and sort it out. I'd recommend installing Nobara to a bootable usb as it has steam etc already installed on the distro https://nobaraproject.org/download-nobara/ - scroll down to nvidia - and select one of the options (default is fine). when in steam - just make sure you go "settings" -> Compatibility - Enable Steam Play for all titles. should only take 5-10 mins. You may need to disable secure boot in the bios before booting in.

however saying all that, as you have done a couple of clean installs of Windows it's probably a physical hardware issue.

I don't think the cable has anything to do with it since I was using this cable before and it was fine. I am not sure how to do the thing with the memory (I also read online that running RAM which has a speed above the CPU's supported speed is fine - the system just downclocks it to match and no issues result) .

I tried turning off GPU acceleration in windows settings - unfortunately the flickering didn't stop and hence the issue is probably still there.

However, I did disable my GPU and enable integrated graphics, and the flickering on YouTube and other videos stopped. Obviously this is not a solution, but it would seem to narrow down the GPU or something graphics related as being the culprit.

I previously posted a version of this here: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/games-keep-crashing-im-desperate-for-a-fix.3878887/ but I am still having the same problem even after I did some other things to try and troubleshoot it that I will detail here. Refer to that thread for additional information.

Ever since I installed a new CPU, RAM, motherboard, and power supply, I have been having issues with my games crashing after a short period (10-45 minutes depending on game). Sometimes the computer will restart without giving me a blue screen, but this is relatively rare. It usually gives me the error code 0xc0000005 (access violation). The BSOD's have been a variety of errors, including IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE. This issue has persisted even after I replaced the RAM and motherboard with different models. As for the graphics card, I have been using that since December 2024 with no problems.

There has also been another issue where on web sites that play videos (like YouTube), the screen will flicker black briefly when videos load. This did not happen before.

I've also noticed that while the computer technically turns on (fans start spinning, RGB on graphics card lights up) on certain outlets, nothing will show up on the monitor. Only on other outlets does it turn on normally. This may indicate a power supply issue of some sort, but as I said below at other places the computer works normally with all of the same components.

Here's the very strange thing. If I take it to another place, such as a friend's house or repair shop, the computer works absolutely fine, with no crashes or flickering. It is only at my house that the computer has problems. My apartment building is pretty old (built in 1937) and that may be related to the issue, though I've never had anything like this before.

Here are some of the things I have done to try and solve the problem

Made a clean install of Windows (twice)
Swapped out RAM stick pair for a different RAM stick pair
Swapped out motherboard for a different motherboard
Buy a new power plug
Plug the computer into an outlet in a different room.
Use a previous PSU (though that had only 650 W as opposed to the 750 W on the new one)

The receptacle your plugging into at home may have its polarity reversed.
