Hey,
Just connected my hd 4870 to HD ready Sharp Aquos display... aaand the quality is whole lot worse than it was when I used DVI.

The gpu has only 2 DVI females so I'm using an hdmi cable with adapter. And it shows 720p on my display. But everything is unclear. I can even see the downgrade in the fonts.
I'm not sure how to explain it best, but no edges are straight. They all have some pixels around them that don't quite know what they're doing there.
I don't think this is how it's supposed to be, so I'd be happy if you got any advice as to why this is happening and what I can do about it

Hm an actual update:
Now my monitor shows 1080p (same horrible quality) And it's actually VGA I use for comparison before, not DVI (DVI on PC's end, connected to VGA on monitor's end).

I'm having 2 screens plugged in, one non-hd ready (nice quality) and one HD rdy (horrible quality). very strange... And my monitor doesnt allow any settings to play around with the quality other than Brightness, contrast etc. (not even adjusting image)

Have you tried another HDMI cable? IT almost sounds like your HDMI cable has gone bad. Or sometimes it's not inserted all the way (which can cause weird artifacting problems you are describing).

Thanks for the reply,

Yes, I've tried 3 cables in total (one of which I used to connect the same monitor to an xbox 360, which worked fine).
On another forum it has been suggested that cheap monitors tend to have bad fonts on HDMI/DVI (mine's about 300 GBP). When I watch movies I'm not sure if it's better than usual or not, but definitely not as bad as fonts and thumbnails

Ok not sure if you have tried this yet...

Click on your start menu.

Type in Cleartype.

Select the cleartype tuner.

Now go through the settings and select which text looks best to you.

Also, have you updated to the latest drivers? Try that as well.

That's actually a very nice tool (cleartype). I did that now, but didn't change much. The problem is more that theres some whitish stuff around the fonts.

E.g. I watch a movie and in the movie if there are fonts (like the name of the school), I see the same problems.

And yeah, the drivers and windows updates and everything are absolutely up-to date.

That Aquos should have more than one HDMI port. You might try changing ports. The are some goofy things on the Aquos with its HDMI ports where it only likes certain devices on certain ports. If that doesn't work try upgrading the TV's firmware. Also you might want to play around with the video card settings as Catalyst is always a major buggy pain and sometimes it doesn't recognize stuff properly ... which is why I use Nvidia.
