when i leave my redhat system idle for about 20 mins or so it makes a loud beep and seems to restart the harddrive. this screws up alot of stuff (like running a server) and id like to fix it. I think its a problem with the sleep mechanism in linux.. how do i turn it off? is there something i should do on my board - its an acer v66m from the p3 500 days.

Could be as simple as in your BIOS....could be a setting within Xconfig for Xwindows if you run it with the GUI...I don't because it provides for more problems. One time my ftp server crashed because of corrupt fonts. Yep...I have a kickarse firewall/server but FONTS caused it to crash!!! I am so used to just a shell I don't need the GUI now anyways. If you can, load onto a command prompt ( don't use startx at all) and you can rule out your BIOS settings. I don't think the settings for Xwindows for sleep or screensaver are taken in effect when the GUI isn't loaded so I'd leave it on the linux prompt and see if you get the same problem.

If you don't, you know it is a setting in Xwindows...which one it is, I'm not sure but I'd try somewhere in your Xconfigurator for the monitor/graphics card. I'm less sure because I only used the GUI in Redhat 7.2 probably a total of 3 times in a year and a half. But at least you now have a direction to go.
