Hey,

Just got my new smooth and silent Maxtor 120 gigs hd... However, Im wondering about the temp. According to "SpeedFan" its temperature is around 52-54 degrees celcius running (even if its working hard it seems)... Now, I wanna know, how bad is this temp? What is recommended?

Thanx,
Ace

52 degrees temperature is fine for your HDD. If you really are worry about any damage that might cause to the drive in the long run, then get a hard disk fan.

It is? Kewl in that case! Hope you are ABSOLUTELY sure about this... Then I dont have to rush after a hd-fan just now... *phu*

The HDDs in my PC are too hot to be touched. I haven't actually measured the temperature, but very likely they're warmer than yours. I don't use any hard disk cooler and the HDDs are still running great after more than one year. Hard disk fans will surely help to lower the temperature, but I am not sure whether they will make any significant improvement in prolonging HDD life. Perhaps other THG members can shed some light on this?

Well 50C is definately too high IMO, check the specs on the manufactures website and see their recomendations.
My SCSI 10k rpm drives upper safe limit is 50C so I actively air cool them constantly along with all the other hard drives in all my systems, they are almost cold to the touch.
Basically if they are luke warm to touch it is ok to run them, very warm or untouchable is not good as this will decrease the life expectancy dramatically, if not kill it immediately. There are some very good HDD cooling solutions around that will give you peace of mind and help the drives live that little bit longer.

Good luck. .

I think it's a bit high. I had disconnected my front case fan (too f***ing noisy) a few months before and my HD and case temps were a bit high (Maxtor D740X-6L 40GB, 42~49 degrees celsius). I recently connected a new [quiet] case fan and nowadays the HD runs at 28~35 degrees celsius with the case closed.

IMHO you need better cooling.

Where would you buy something to actually take your drive's temperature? I've been able to find a sticker for a drive enclosure, but that's not quite what I'm after.
