My computer boots up and then loads the 'starting windows' page but fails there and restarts. I did a repair install to see the problem but it said it does not know what the problem is although it said once 'a patch is preventing this system from starting'.

I can't perform a fresh install of windows as the software I had on it I've do not remember the product key for it. I ran chkdsk /f /r also and this brought back no results.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks, Kyle

Solution
If the chkdsk and safe mode solutions didn't work as well as the repair option, you could try system restore or a third party software to resolve the issue. It's very unfortunate that you don't have an OS DVD, because that would've helped. Good luck.
Windows 7 32bit. I had set updates to perform automatically so yes this may have been the case. I have actually read that article before and I tried booting in the last known good configuration and safe mode but it still shut down before it could launch.
