HDD having stutter

Hi, I have an issue that sounds really odd to me. Its as such when I play games, for example red orchestra 2, on my HDD. there is a terrible stutter and fps drops. When I play the same game on my SSD, there is no stutter, how come? I've read something about the ram or something being connected to this issue. It just seems odd as the SSD should only affect load speed as I've understood? Anyway if anyone knows why this might happen or if it's possible, please share.

The HDD is a Seagate desktop 2TB 7200 rpm. Bought it today.

Any help appreciated.

Hey Krille3. Do you hear any unusual sounds coming from the drive? I'd recommend that you backup any important that which you might have on the HDD, just in case. Then go ahead and download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool to test the drive and see if there's anything wrong with it. This could also be due to a faulty SATA connection as well. If the test doesn't show anything unusual, I'd recommend that you try it with a different SATA and power connection.

Thanks for the good answer. All the sound I'm getting is a terrible vibration and sometimes a beeping thing, probaonly the hard drive working.I have Indeed tried another sata connection on the motherboard, also tried the manufacturer tool which showed nothing. Could issues like those I described happen because of a faulty drive?

Hmm you've done well by trying those things. And yes, it is possible, but it's strange that the diagnostic tests didn't show anything out of the ordinary if the drive has any issues. You could try to test it's random and sequential read/write speed to determine if the results match the figures of the drive's specifications, because the sudden drop of speed may indeed make your gameplay laggy and cause the FPS to go down.

It seems as it was not the HDD, but the game. (Planetside 2) which should be played in 32bit for a smooth experience. I have to say a big thank you for your assistance though, greatly appreciated. I bought another SSD for playing on though, and will later buy a WD Red for storage, as I'm building a quiet PC and the HDD I bought sure aint quiet.

Well the important thing is that you figured out what was causing the issue - good job. As for secondary storage I'd recommend the WD Green instead of the WD Red. It runs cool and quiet and this is it's main purpose after all, the WD Red is NAS/RAID drive, which is specifically tested and designed for that.
