HDD Making clicking/grinding sound and PC freezes

Hi guys,

So about two weeks ago, my 8 year old HDD died on my Gateway PC. I managed to recover only document files off of that and ordered a new Toshiba HDD - its a DT01ACA300 3TB 7200RPM Hard drive. So I installed windows 10 on that, restored my documents onto the new pc, set it up and everything was working fine until 3 days ago, when I heard a random clicking/grinding as if the HDD needle was stuck and my PC stopped responding all together. It happened again today and I am not sure what could be causing this. I am backing up my photos and documents again onto my external hard drive, just in case and I was hoping if someone can tell me what this random clicking/grinding sound means? Could it be a faulty hdd, like my last one or is it a deeper issue with my motherboard? I just recently bought it and feel super annoyed that I can hear it clicking already!

Hello Bilal,
1st of all we need to understand if it's your hard drive that is faulty or not. As far as I know, your motherboard is not likely to be the problem here... it sounds more as if the hard drive is phisically damaged (did you order it online or buy it yourself?)

Use this software: http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

it'll help you to understand if your hdd is healthy or not.

Keep saving your sensitive data on your external drive.

After that, if the HDD is damaged, I assume it's still under warranty, so you should be able to send/bring it back where you bought it and have a new one.

Let us know what CrystalDiskInfo says about your drive

Download HDDSentinel (https://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php) and check the health and SMART status of your new hard disk drive. If there are any errors, then it can be a failing HDD. If you find CRC error counts, then it is probably a bad sata cable or a bad sata port.

I ran the software and these are the results I got, again I am confused because all these things show my hdd to be good and it has been working fine for the last week or so, but yea I've heard the clicking sound + computer freeze, twice in the 3 weeks Ive had it :L

Drive health is good.
Try changing sata cables.
