HDD not detected through USB-IDE/SATA adapter

I bought a Hama USB-IDE/SATA adapter AA25 to copy files on the HDD of my malfunctioning Satellite A110-225 to my custom desktop PC. Although it says that no separate power cord is needed when attaching a 2,5'' - it says so in the manual - it seems my system doesn't detect the HDD so there 'll be no transferring just yet.
Any idea what the problem is?

does the computer recognize the Hama when you plug it in?

The adapter didn't come with a separate power cable. It says it gets its power through the pc it is attached to.

Are you attaching a 2.5" or a 3.5" drive? Only the laptop drives will be powered off the USB port, and then only if the port in question has the power budget to do it. 3.5" drives require external power.

Edit: Looks like a 3.5" drive in the picture. External power required.

It's a 2.5'', and it's attached to a desktop computer, so I'm pretty sure power supply isn't the issue either.

I'm assuming you followed this procedure:

1. Disconnect adapter from USB port
2. Attach drive to adapter
3. Connect adapter to USB port (don't use a hub, connect directly to the computer)

Does the drive spin up? If not you've got a faulty adapter (assuming the drive is ok).

... bloody faulty adapter it be. It was the cheapest they had, but still, €24 comma something for a piece of **** is still dearly paid. Since I opened up the package I assume they will not be taking it back

Normally I'm not too fond of red lights, but on this device I would gladly have seen it.

I've sent an email to the German manufacturer's HQ, asking for help.

Best $40 I've spent for an adapter. Comes with a power brick so there's no question of will the port power it or not.

I tried connecting the SSD of my other laptop via the adapter to my PC and it DOES detect the SSD. The SSD has IDE though, so the faulty part may be the SATA connector.
