HDD not detected until "Scan for hardware changes"

Hi everyone,

as said in the title I have the following problem:
one of my HDD sometimes isn't getting detected by windows after startup (50% of times) until I go to the device manager and "Scan for hardware changes". Most of the time windows then detects the drive.

I tried with changing the SATA cable and also tried changing the SATA port after I got an "SATA port 2 error" in the bios during startup. Didn't help, it still doesn't get detected sometimes.

Another strange thing is that before, it happened to another HDD until it got completely damaged. And now it started on this one.

What might be faulty? The hard drive? The motherboard? Both?

Is the drive connected with a SATA cable or eSATA cable? Also, do you have is it running in AHCI or IDE mode?
You may need to enable AHCI and/or update the drivers for your storage controller.

well I have a few questions. Is this a desktop computer? If so what PSU do you have and how old is it? It could be a failing PSU that is taking parts with it as it fails. Also you may want to check your BIOS to see if it is setup to fast boot and change that.

It's a desktop.
asus rampage III extreme
intel i7 920 2.67 ghz (quite an old one)

BIOS was set to quick boot, I disabled it and will check out if it works.

It's an internal drivev, connected with a SATA cable. It is set to AHCI and all drivers are up to date. I tried with IDE but it still happens.

I also just made some tests using SeaTools and the HDD seems to be fine.

Just a quick update:
after disabling the quick boot in the bios it seems to be working fine now.
