Hi, i have an Samsung Spinpoint drive starting to get older. Nothing is wrong with it, it works great, good read/write speeds, and programs say that the Health is good on it. However it is making a annoying clicking noise randomly, when the hard drive is being used. It is my HDD for games, so it is very annoying when it happends in a game, beacuse it clicks and then the game freezes for about one second, then it continues as usual. It happends completely randomly. However, otherwise it is making no signs of failure at all, it is otherwise quiet. What it this?

One other thing is, ive had this HDD on three different motherboards, on the first one it made the click noise, on the second, it never did for a long time, and now on the third its doing it again.

Something's failing internally. It sounds like it's getting stuck at a certain part of the disk. Had an IBM years ago that when filled up to 30 GB of 40 GB capacity would make a repetitive thunk noise, then sound like the disk was spinning up again, during which the whole computer would freeze.

If you were to do a full disk check, you'd probably find it's unable to access certain sectors on the disk, but at this point I'd just back it up and replace it.

I think maybe due to the age of the HDD, the 'mileage' of the rotor is close to its end of life. The clicking sound that you are hearing might be due to the miss alignment of the bearing inside the rotor that is responsible for the spinning of the plater.

I would strongly recommend you to start backing up the data on that Samsung HDD to another HDD before it completely dies on you without further signs of failure.

It is clicking.
It is freezing.

It is dying.

I have another 1tb drive, which i have backed up everything now on, that drive isnt the best though. Will buy a new one if the Samsung gets worse.
