I've got a brand new WD Blue 1TB for storage and i was wondering if it's supposed to make any sounds while reading and writing? It's like listening to an old HP desktop hard drive crackling, if that makes sense. It's hard to describe. It's not that loud but it's noticeable.

Solution
Hi there Snapzz3,

In case you have some important data stored on the drive, it may be good idea to back it up. You should back up the data that you can't afford to lose even if you think that a drive is working perfectly fine anyway.
Apart from that, I guess you can test the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool(both short and extended tests): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=veAB0C

The results should show the overall health status of the drive.

It should get better with some use, or fail completely, either way the sound its making sounds nothing out of the ordinary. If the drive is vibrating you could suspend it from the cage with some elastic bands.

My Seagate Barra 1TB was making a crackling noise when I built my system. Now I can't hear it, although that may be because of a loud fan that I added in. I'm sure it would be nothing to worry about. Are you able to record the noise?

I don't think a recording would be able to pick up the sound. I'll just wait and see if it gets better if it's normal. The drive is brand new so i've still got 2 years of warranty left.

A bit of noise is completely normal, especially when writing or reading.
However HDDs today are pretty silent compared to old HDDs, say from the 90s (you can still hear it clearly, however). So if its really loud, it could mean its failing.
Yet, if you have screwed it directly to the metal drive bay of your PC case it could act as a magnifier of that sound, since now the whole case is getting those vibrations, so it could seem its much louder. Try it when its out of the case.

I'm pretty sure it's just the 1 TB drives, because I have a brand new 1 TB for my OS and it also makes a little noise, I would start to worry when the drive is making a pinging kind of noise which would tend to mean a bad sector on the platter but if it’s like a reading crackle I wouldn’t worry too much. If I had a pinging noise normally that would alarm me too start doing a back-up of data and getting a new hard drive as soon as possible. However I know the 2 TB Hard Drives are much more silent compared to the 1 TB for some unknown reason.
