[SOLVED] HDD Shown as Unknown / Not Initialized, No Disk Size Info, Not Visible

Greetings all,

All of a sudden one of my HDDs became unavailable, missing from the list of HDDs...

It began 2 days ago, suddenly its gone. Then I had to restart the PC and it came back.

I used it, accessed my files as normal.

Yesterday it gone again, after 2 restarts it came back. After a while it gone for good.

I changed the cables, used different ports and also tried to use some softwares like Minitool or EaseUS but none of them did help. Afterall, they can't see/access the HDD either.

I tried Disk Management tool (Windows). It shows the disk as "Disk Unknown / Not Initialized"

I can't initialize it, it gives an error saying "Incorrect Function". A couple of hours ago, the error message was different though. It was something like "a device which was not exist specified" .

So, does it mean the HDD is gone for good? Is there a way to revive it?

This usually means that the drive has suffered a hardware error.
If you really need the data off of it, then you will need to send it out for rebuild & recovery.

Do you have a backup of this data?
Is the drive still under warranty?

@popatim Thank you for your reply, i fear you are right

@USAFRet I do not have a backup unfortunately, but luckily as far as I remember the data on that HDD was not super important. But I wanted to be sure before letting this incident go and accept it as a loss. It is not under warranty as well, actually that disk is quite old, I got it in 2009 or 2010 if I'm not mistaken.


So it seems there is no way to access it and check right? I am %85 certain that the data was trivial (like game files, movies etc) but it would be really great to check first. All i need is to see the contents. I suspect the main faulty part of the drive is its data connection port because obviously it got power (windows can see it) but can't respond any hails from the OS (thus windows or any kind of software can't talk with it)
