Transferring my hdd to my ssd and I want to do this right. I just got my computer set up and recently decided I wanted a ssd. I recently installed all my music software on my computer and it took a couple days, don't feel like doing that all over again. I unfortunately can't fit my instrument libraries(240 gigs).
So would it be safe to partition my hdd so that the libraries are on a seperate partition and then clone the MBR and C drive onto the ssd?
Any settings other then changing the sata to achi, such as windows defrag?

As far as I know, the amount of data on the source disk has to be able to fit on the SSD with room to spare. Cloning software will copy ALL the source disk. Not just a partition - from what I've seen anyway.

I bought a samsung ssd and used its cloning software. I had to get a fair bit of stuff off my source disk though before it would work.

Hey there, AntaeGhost!

@i7Baby is totally right! Instead of tempering with the partitions on the drive and risking data loss. Rather use a cloning software that will let you manually select what get's cloned to the SSD and what doesn't. (like Acronis True Image, etc.) Here are some suggestions you can use: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1848564/hdd-cloning-software.html
This link explains the whole cloning procedure: http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid-state-drive-without-reinstalling-windows
However, if you in possession of the Windows Installation media, I strongly recommend performing a fresh install of the OS. But make sure you unplug the HDD if you are doing that, otherwise an OS confusion might occur which might cause boot issues later on.
Here are a couple of links about SSD + HDD setups that might be helpful to you:
