I bought a sandisk 240gb SSD. I want to clone everything on my WD 1tb HDD. I have used 216gb on my HDD. What program can I use to clone it? I have tried Ease Us todo and Reflect and both say they are incompatible disk sizes. Please help

Solution

Macrium Reflect
However, for a 240GB drive, you want to get your current used space lower than your current 216GB. Down to 190 or so.
Hey there, Noah_5.

Basically you could go with whatever cloning software you'd like. Having only 216GB of data on your drive should make the clone as most programs copy over only existing data no matter how large the partition might be. You could check out this thread for a few more suggestions and you could follow the tutorial from this article on how to clone your drive: http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid-state-drive-without-reinstalling-windows.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes.

1. You can clone drive/partitions source as long as the total usage of that particular drive/partitions does not exceed the total size of the clone destination.
2. If you are using an SSD, try to leave at least around 10-15% storage space free, if you want your SSD to last long. Do not fill it to max.
3. Only programs and OS (Windows) will gain benefit, if you put them on SSD. Normal data e.g. music, videos, pictures, etc. however does not. You should move your normal data somewhere else, so it would not be part of the cloning.

Whats a program you recommend for that?

Currently, the terms clone and migration are sort of interchangeable.
Yes...technically they are not. But that is the way they are used.

"Cloning requires the same size drive." This is not entirely true...
You can clone or migrate drive/partitions source as long as the total usage of that particular drive/partitions does not exceed the total size of the clone destination.
You can clone a 500GB drive/partition to a 240GB SSD as long as the total usage of that 500GB drive/partition does not exceed 250GB.
Most clone software can do the resizing e.g. aomei, macrium reflect, etc.
However, you will not want to get a 240GB SSD filled with 240GB. This will shorten your SSD livespan.
BTW. 240GB after format, etc. you will see around 216GB only.
It is highly recommended that you bring the total usage below 190GB as mentioned above.

Do you know of any updated guides? The version of eaus is V6 and I think they are on V9 and the re-modeled it all.
