Yes I know you are going to say SSD, but what if I upgraded my 5,400rpm hdd to a 7,200rpm hdd would it have the sane or near enough performance to an ssd.

So what I am asking is whether a fast HDD would have the same or near enough performance to an SSD.

Thanks in advance!

Solution
nowhere near, a good HDD might transfer at 150MB/s, an SSD 550MB/s is the norm. But it is access time, measured in micro seconds vs milliseconds, and the related small file access where SSD's massively outperform HDD's, and this occurs during windows booting.

note that both of these articles are old, SSD's have improved a lot since then, HDD's have improved little.

Not even a little bit close.
You're going from a bicycle, to a slightly faster bicycle. An SSD would be moving to a Corvette. An NVMe SSD would be a Ferrari.

I'm not sure why someone deleted their message with was broadly correct, an M.2 SDD will be technically faster, but for day to day usage you have reached the inflection point of diminishing returns with a sata SSD, some applications will be able to take advantage of it however.

And to further refine it:
An m.2 NVMe drive will be 'faster'.
A SATA based m.2 drive is the same performance as a regular 2.5" SATA III drive.
