Solution
Hdmi has worked wonders for PC gaming :) imo besides video, sound is just as important as graphics and no better way in doing that without a proper surround sound system and can do all that with just one hdmi cable. Im aware not everyone can do that for various reasons but its there if you want it.

DP in terms of video and audio(Some DP devices like from HP can do sound as ive found out - but as you said not standard yet) quality is identical to hdmi except for bandwidth. For the moment DP 1.2 can handle 4k at 60hz while hdmi 1.4 at 30hz until hdmi 2.0 arrives and can do 4k @ 60hz. Then theres DP 1.3 leading again @ 8k. DP is promising but wouldn't use that to avoid hdmi.
First things first, there's no difference in HDMI vs DVI video output, and none is better on that terms, assuming you don't have a 4k monitor, which at 24" is useless in first place. HDMI carries sound, many monitors have inbuilt speakers, or jacks to connect headsets or speakers to, so HDMI is a plus there.

Probably, I don't use hdmi on my graphics cards. Im pretty sure my ancient 7600 does not output sound through hdmi

Its no drama, probably never looked into it since pc speakers don't come with hdmi. It's more toward TVs and surround sound a/v systems which is for ever crowing in popularity. I hoper pc speakers start coming out with hdmi in's and out's for video pass through, how cool would that be :)

Since gpus started incorporating hdmi is when sound was available. Before that, some gpus had S/PDIF optical. Im not sure which Nvidia gpu started that but think it was the 9800GTX. AMD were earlier in the game with their HD series.

My dad had a card with a S/PDIF optical on it for sound through hdmi. Displayport standards allow for audio as well i think but i dont know if it would be utilised. No reason it cant be, displayport has a lot of throughput. I don't like HDMI on pc, its a home theatre interface in my mind; inferior to dp
