Question HDMI Issue with new monitor ?

Hey everyone,

I’m having an issue with my new ASUS VA259HGA Monitor and could really use some advice. I’ve already submitted a case with ASUS, but I figured this community might have insights into monitor quirks like this.

The Issue:​

• The monitor works flawlessly at 120Hz HDMI-to-HDMI with other PCs, and I’ve verified the HDMI cable is fine.
• However, with my PC, the monitor does not recognize the HDMI signal at all—no beeps, just "HDMI No Signal" and VGA light stays longer than usual until windows starts.

Testing & Observations:​

1. Before this monitor, I used a VGA-to-HDMI adapter with an older Fujitsu L-22T-4 monitor, which worked fine.
2. Using VGA-to-HDMI, both the old monitor and the ASUS monitor work with my PC.
3. If I boot into BIOS using VGA and then switch to HDMI, the ASUS monitor works temporarily but stops after a reboot.
4. On Debian Linux:
   • If I start with VGA and switch to HDMI after boot, I see a frozen frame before it stops working(Wayland), and it works almost fully with(X11) but with a black background and no app bar on the bottom 60hz and that virus effect is visible behind moving windows(replicates windows) this only happens on(x11).
5. The HDMI port on my GPU works fine with DVI to HDMI adapters for other monitors.
6. when setting up a new OS like Debian the HDMI-HDMI works flawlessly until the next reboot required to enter the system.
7. Just tested my PC and it works with HDMI to a TV so both my monitor and PC work with other devices on HDMI but not together, ?????????.

• Motherboard: B450 Aorus Pro (BIOS version F66d - latest)
• GPU: RTX 2060 Gaming OC Pro White 6GB
• CPU: Ryzen 1600
• RAM: 16GB

Additional Details:​

• My VGA-to-HDMI adapter defaults to 60Hz at 1920x1080 and struggles over that, but I’ve managed to overclock it to 120Hz-125hz at 1024x768.
• I’d love to fully utilize 120Hz+ on HDMI 1920x1080 for better performance.

I’m completely stumped because:

• The monitor and HDMI cable work with other systems.
• My PC works with other monitors HDMI to HDMI 4K, GPU is working no problems.
• The HDMI port on my GPU also works with other monitors (via DVI to HDMI adapters).
• The ASUS monitor only works with my PC under very specific conditions (e.g., booting via VGA first).

Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Note: this thread will be constanly updated as long as possible I am determined to fix this no matter how long
update:

• I managed to make it work in debian 12 with KDE plasma(x11) by unplugging the VGA adapter and plugging hdmi-hdmi cable at log-on screen it doesn't work fully it only shows me previously opened programs(firefox etc...) it plays youtube it's running at 60hz but the background is blacked out and there is no app bar at the bottom and things behave oddly, after a restart I can't replicate it, with a live boot USB I can only set up when it logs on I lose connection(HDMI no signal), I get weird seg faults and EDID errors on, I might try to remove EDID.
• I am considering - buying an HDMI-DP adapter I know ridiculous it is what it is.
• Just tested my PC with a 4K monitor, works flawlessly now this is more puzzling.
• if I have to reprogram the kernel and bios from scratch I will do it.

TL;DR
pc works with every other monitor on hdmi
monitor works with every other pc and system on hdmi
they don't work together??

What has dsub exactly? Because i don't see any part old enough to have this connection type (vga). Vga to hdmi terminology in order of things when describing 'to' means source to display.

No signal is usually (being obvious i know, sry) because cable isn't in properly. Well, since cable apparently works, check both ends are in properly. Sometimes bulky cable ends can prevent full insertion depending on where the video ports are located, with both case and monitor.

check if the hdmi cable without any adapter can be plugged into the 2060 tightly and deeply enough. sometimes the plugs of hdmi are to big to fit in completely. try a different hdmi cable

the cideo ports of your motherboard won't work at all, only use the 2060

what exactly is a DCI-P to HDMI adapter?

don't use any adapters

check if the monitor source is set to auto or hdmi

Just a bit of reading material, similar hdmi problem but with dual monitors.
Fixed the problem, but hard to say if it a communication problem between OS &GPU ?
Or a specific time in the boot process that detects the hdmi/connected monitor?
I offered a suggestion for connection/boot/power off etc. and it worked. Yours is slightly different but shows it can be fixed, sometimes.

I got a new monitor for a dual display on my PC. My PC graphics card has 1 HMDI plug and 1 Display port plug. Old monitor was plugged in via HDMI previously. New monitor did not come with a display port, so I had to switch my new monitor to the HDMI connection and my old monitor to the display...

With Windows if you open up the Devices menu and Remove any monitors listed there, then reboot, does that help?

yes all ends are in and it works with other pcs and monitors.

yes same issue with different cable, yes, dci-p is my mistake it's DVI, yes then it won't work, yes.

unfortunately wouldn't work monitor is not recognized in HDMI on windows, and my VGA light stays on when I plug it in, so it's not that.

doesn't work can't underclock below 60hz too even with CRU
it surprisingly works with 1920 32hz on ventoy(vga adapter first then disconnect in menu and connect hdmi) very odd.

reset the monitor to factory settings /reset all in osd

would RMA the monitor and try a different one
very strange thing, cause other pcs and other monitors are working with both

where does this light shine?

only resolution you shouldn't try is 1920x1080 75Hz, which is not supported by your monitor
