Am I doing something wrong or will this even work? So I am trying to get a tri monitor system going with my laptop counting as a monitor. So right now i have the hdmi cable connected to my laptop and it goes into the output, then the two monitors go into the out. The two monitors are the same and the laptop is different. I should be able to go to the system preferences display arrangement and be able to do stuff there. But it only shows the laptop and the two monitors as one. Do i need another cable or a different kind of box?

here is the splitter i bought

An HDMI splitter does not give you more work area it just allows the same thing to display on multiple screens. With display port you may be able to get an adapter that will let you use multiple screens on 1 port.

Products like DualHead2Go and TripleHead2Go also allow this kind of functionality, but they generally let your computer see a very wide resolution and then spread it over the screens.

If you happen to have Display Port(thunderbolt contains it), I would see if your screen supports this standard. This may allow you to get what you want without too much extra hardware.
