So all of a sudden I can't enable HDR in Windows. The second I click "Use HDR", the button just goes from being on to instantly off. Why could that be? Seems to be a Windows-side issue as on the monitor everything seems to be set up correctly to allow for HDR. Even before if HDR was turned off on the monitor it still allowed me to at least turn it on in Windows, even if made the screen not look quite right. I have tried different cables as well but still nothing. I have done nothing to the PC that should've caused this changed or made any Windows changes when it started to occur out of nowhere.

Any Event ID numbers such as 10016?

FYI (with all due credit to @Colif):

I am not sure about applicability to Windows 11 so will defer accordingly.
Yeah 10016 is the event number for all those events. So is it just some random error not related to the issue then?
i thought hdr was fixed?
It did get fixed, but only for like a day. I have the exact same issue again now.

most events in event viewer can be ignored. DCOM errors are windows database errors. things get changed but not everywhere. I think most people have them. Clean installs might not. but once patches happen things get messy.

this probably get fixed at same time as other problem. I don't have any ideas I haven't already suggested. your windows is sick somehow. How is a good question though.

did the other user also have hdr problem?

I tried both on a new user also the superadmin account, both had the same issue with HDR.

So after a lot of trial and error, I found a way to force HDR on, though it pretty much defies all logic.
First, I have to connect a second, non-HDR monitor up to my PC. Then I set them up as one extended desktop. When I apply that setting, when the image comes back, it's displaying in HDR. As far as I can tell, duplication or PC screen only don't work, only extending the desktop to the other monitor works. Another way I found is to force it on by first turning on an HDR-enabled game, enabling HDR via the Xbox game bar, then restarting the game. I have no idea what's going on anymore...

Edit: So I figured out why it allowed me to turn HDR on under those circumstances. When it extends the screen, my display switched to 60Hz in Windows. Then it allows me to turn on HDR. But at 144Hz, it doesn't for some reason, even though it did before. Any ideas?

What make/model monitor is it? You never told me, you just told me what it isn't.

Some makers restrict when HDR runs (what speeds) so its possible yours only runs at 60htz or maybe 100, and isn't available at anything higher

Some monitors limit HDR refresh rate regardless of its regular refresh rate (even with HDMI 2.0) It is possible to have 144hz regular run at 60hz HDR or 100hz HDR.
Check with the manufacturer and see if they limit refresh rate in HDR mode.

I can find cases where it won't enable at 60 but only at 120.

It's an Aorus FV43U. Again this doesn't seem like any kind of restriction as it did work before and only started happening recently out of nowhere.

do you have latest firmware?
Update include:
  1. Fixed the issue that monitor can't be awaken by HDMI input source.
  2. Fixed the issue when switching refresh rate in 4K resolution.
  3. Fixed HDR brightness issue.
Note : It needs to install OSD sidekick first to update firmware.

Yes updated the firmware as well already.

slaps ubuntu for not having HDR again...

I would contact Gigabyte and see what they suggest. I would point you at their forum but it closed down earlier this year, if you click firmware link you can click the online support menu.
they might have an explanation as to why.
