I was watching something on netflix with headphones on a laptop with Win 10 (clean install, not upgrade). I paused it and walked away for about 1.5 hours, but when I got back I woke the laptop up and the headphones didnt work. It was just silent.

When I unplug and plug them back in I get the pop-up asking me to confirm that they are headphones but the realtek HD audio manager has the configuration set to stereo with no headphone option.

I have no headphone option in my sound devices (including disabled) and I have tried reintalling the realtek drivers several times (including the ones from the realtek website).

I have also tried more than one set of headphones confirmed to be working. When turning the volume up to full I cant hear anything.

They have been working fine all day and I cant find any updates. Any ideas? Help!

Solution
Fixed it. No matter how many times I reinstalled the drivers I found that the default format had been altered and needed changing back to '24 bit, 44100 Hz'. No idea what changed it.
I had difficulty with my headphone working when I installed windows 10 a few days ago. I have a USB sound card that I use. I tried the onboard sound jack and it worked but the USB did not. This is a little different than your issue but I went through the same drills to figure out a solution including reinstalling the realtek drivers and most importantly the Realtek audio manager which solved the problem and gave me some configuration options for the headphone (the drivers themselves did not).

The Realtek audio manager isnt giving me any more options, and I have tried reinstalling all of it :\
