I want to replace a Pentium II-MMX chip but I don't know how to release the metal Heatsink clamp. I think it is a Socket 5 CPU inserted in a Socket 7 Mainboard. Thank you.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh Pentium 2's were in Slot 1 form factor. No socket, stud.

Perhaps u have a Pentium MMX or a Pentium III?

Thanks for answering--
It's a Pentium II-MMX, 233 MHz. The heatsink clamp says 'Socket 5', and the Motherboard area says 'Socket 7'.

I'm not able to find such a Pentium II variation. Again, so far as I know, pentium 2 was only made in the slot format.

But regardless... if it's a socket 5 or 7, all u gotta do is push down on the end w/ the large whole in it and push out at the same time.

What I used to do was push down on the bigger end part w/ my finger and then use a flat head screw driver to pop off the clamp. Does that make sense?

It does take a little bit of brute force... but don't worry too much. Pentium CPU's were hard to break. It's the exposed die ones you gotta worry about (Pentium 3 namely).

from what i remember, its held on by only 1 metalic bar that is bent in an M style/shape.

To remove it you have to push down on one end and pull the bottom forward with a flathead screwdriver, its attached to a little clip at the front of the socket.

shouldnt be too hard.

I'm not exactly sure if that's right but it might, if anything try to describe it and I will try to help - I have 2 boxes filled with old Pentium Pro systems, Old Amd systems and other stone age computers

Hope this helps

It worked. It's the M-shaped kind as you mentioned, I pushed down on the top and it came off. Before, I couldn't tell how the clamp was attached--there was a hole in the clamp that fit around a plastic piece on the Mainboard. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

I Don't Think Theres Such a Thing as Pentium II-MMX 233Mhz
I've got a CPU running in my Room and it clearly a Black coloured Pentium MMX not Pentium II a Pentium MMX and it's clock speed is at 233Mhz. the Pentium Never had to print MMX on the pentium II, the pentium II never started at speeds of anywhere below 200Mhz There might be pentium II 233Mhz but i've never found it yet Only Own a Pentium MMX 233Mhz. Just my 2 cents

hehe  , I searched quite some places and never found the Pentium II-"MMX" @ 233Mhz(because they came naturally built-in)I actually have that have that Processer Block Sitting in my closet speed@266 but can be underclocked to 233Mhz with a chipped off connecter but it says nowhere "MMX". Just saying the that MMX sticker or print i've seen are on the Ceramic or the plastic(black) CPU Die on the Pentium's(one) never on any of the Pentium 2 Blocks. kks 😛 😛 😛

i don't recall seeing them either. by the time the P2 came out, everyone knew what MMX was, so there was no need to plaster it on the CPU.

but i think intel did market the P2 as having "MMX technology." that was back when lavar burton was doing the voiceovers for the commercials. hehehe.
