x is the number of speakers
y is the number of sub-woofers
For example, a 5.1 system is [typically]: 2 front speakers, 2 side/rear speakers, 1 center speaker, and one sub-woofer. Thats 5 total speakers and 1 sub-woofer. A 4.1 system is the same, minus the center speaker. Etc.
