They will perform the same, unless the Ultimate is x64. The Ultimate just adds features, but should not impact performance in applications.

From the onles you listed, 7 Ultimate is the best.
Amongst all OSes today, 7 Ultimate 64 bit rocks.

Chances are you won't use most of the features in Ultimate anyway... about the only difference between it and Pro is the Bitlocker encryption. If that's important to you, then you'll have to get Ultimate. If you couldn't care less... then you're better off sticking with Home or Pro.

Vista would probably be more compatible with more games than Windows 7 but in general Vista sucks.

I'll second that Zoron - there are few extras built in to Ultimate that the average consumer needs...in fact, very few things are in there over Professional edition

Figure out if you'll use the extras...if not, go for the standard version (Home Premium)

Unless you need the virtual machine support or bitlocker, then Home premium is all you need. Just make sure you get the 64bit copy so you can use all your ram.
