HELP! 64GB Sandisk micro sd won't format

Just got a Samsung Galaxy S5 and transferring the 64GB Sandisk micro sd from my Galaxy S4. Here are the steps I performed:

1. First, I unmounted the card safely from the S4.
2. Put it in a Sandisk brand card reader (SDHC) - I believe this is the one the card actually shipped with
3. Using Windows explorer, I right-clicked and chose Quick Format with options exFAT and 128 KB allocation unit size. It shows capacity as 59.4 GB
4. I let it run for about an hour and it never completed the job (also the process never stopped responding, which is what I expected to happen)
5. So I had to just pull the card without doing a safe-remove, which probably was not good
6. Tried just putting it in my S5 to use it's formatting function but it fails every time (tried 10 times now). It locks up the phone during the erase function and then it reboots.

Thanks, I just tried that and it says the card is write-protected, which of course, it not possible because it has no lock switch, so something else is locking it up, maybe from an unsafe removal? Or maybe it's the card reader itself. This is the exact one

Thanks... none of those methods worked. Interestingly, I get a "dirty disk" error I get when I try to copy a text to it... says to run chkdisk again, which I already did...

This is exactly the same thing happened to my 64gb microsdxc sandisk. It says it is write protected. It just mysteriously became like that when I was saving a dl torrent file to it unexpectedly. Im afraid it is a hardware problem. Perhaps we got bad batch of cards that Sandisk honestly claims.

Ahhhh, so it's game-over if the card detects a fault in itself. It locks itself and thus no matter what you do (from formatting to deleting) the BEST that you can do is restore access to the card itself (use testdisk software) and then you just have to contact warranty.

I know that it’s frustrating. When I put my new card (64GB) in the micro SD slot of my PC (Windows 7), it prompts to format the card and I click yes… big mistake, it format the card to 64K, and there were no way to formatted again, even with the SDCard formatting software.

I was about to through the card away, then I realize that my Nikon uses SD cards, but the regular size, so I inserted the card into the camera with the adapter and formatted using the LCD menu and… Tan! tan! Got back my 64GB card!

I guess you can do it with any camera that accepts SD card, with or without the adapter. If you have data on your card I don’t recommend you to use this method; you will lose all your data.

Still have problems when I use it on the PC however in my Windows 8.1 tablet, where I really use the card, it works just fine.

Same exact problem. Used Sandisk Tech Support link : http://kb.sandisk.com/app/ask Just got off live chat with SanDisk customer service. SanDisk has lifetime warranty. Support sent me free shipping label to mail microsd card back. SanDisk email says 7-10 day turnaround time for replacement. so doesn't appear to be a "fix" but at least you can get card replaced. I was having this same problem and what I found that worked is under the format window, "file system" is set to FAT32 by default and when I changed it to exFAT I was able to format the card.

I thought all was lost too. Inadvertently wiped the disk (w/ diskpart "clean" during install of Windows). Couldn't read, format, etc.
Put it in my digital camera - All is well! formatted just fine!!!! Thanks!

I just called Hong Kong's service 800-hotline. They told me my card is write protected and they can arrange for a replacement.

I came across this same exact problem with my cheap Straight Talk phone being unable to format a mSDXC 64gb card.

I simply put the microSD in my mother-in-law's cheap Straight Talk phone instead and it formatted it right away. I then placed the microSD back into my phone and it worked! No third party software or ESL customer service needed!

Used a micro SD USB adapter not card reader that came with a Kingston 64gb microSD and formatted to exFAT on a MacBook. The USB adapter HAS to be the one for 64gb to work. I tried on an older adapter that looked identical to newer one and it only popped up on my laptop as being 27gb. No 3rd party software necessary.

This is my 3rd 64gb samsung. One stopped showing up on my note4 after months. Paid $125 to my shop. The couple thousand files lost all the name's and many had double exposures or were half one pic and half another pic.
Second one is ok so far after 2 months.
Now my phone won't move files into xsd or device, word doesn't auto save, multi windows is erratic and back tap takes me all the way back up several steps.

Is it because of new Noufat update or my device storage is too full. Now my laptop does not detect my device storage so I can't move anything out.

My 3rd xsd formatted to FAT on my laptop. Then I wanted it formatted to NTFS and it won't finish formatting. Said it is locked, unknown file and bunch other stuff.

Contact Samsung? for replacement? Or order a new one from the same vendor, return the defective and let them deal w Samsung. GRRR Smooth sailing until Nougat and their updates
