Help! 670 vs 7950 vs 660 ti

Hi so I'm building a rig and I'm hoping to not change it until I graduate in 3 years.
So far all my components are top tier( due to alot of impulse buying) but I still need the GPU. I'm a relatively poor college student so I would like the best value/ performance. But any opinions would be nice.

So so far:
CPU : i7 3770k
MB: MSI Z77A G3D?
HDD: Samsung SSD 250gb
Case: Zalman Z9 Plus
RAM: Corsair Vengance 16gb(8x2)
PSU: Seasonic X750W

So I'm looking at 3 things:

660 ti

honestly can care less about the coupons, just looking at card alone.

I would normally advise against a reference cooler especially the 670's however EVGA's approach differs a little bit there coolers are a little different. particularly the shroud. If you were looking for the best card per performance then perhaps the 7950 would be the ticket. However the 670 is a worth while card to look at as well.

The way I look at it is like this

Best card just under 300 dollars
7950

Strong Mid level value
660Ti

Best price to performance high end card
670

Is a good 670 worth 350+ dollars sure however if you are looking to save a little and get similar performance in terms of what you yourself see on the screen a 7950 should be sufficient. Plus you get two triple A titles with Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite. If...

If you're looking to get a 670, don't get a reference cooler one. Although they are better than AMD reference cooler (Anything is better than those), they are still loud. I would recommend the 7950 or 7870 LE, both are great bang for your buck.

A 7950 at 1.2 GHZ (Which is fairly standard to get, but not guaranteed) would probably beat a 670 moderately overclocked.

Actually a 7950 at 1200 mhz will beat an overclocked gtx 680.I had me and a friend who has an evga 670 and he ran 7 benches for me and at 950 mhz my 7950 was equaling his 670 we run the same proccessor and everything.a 7950 at 1100 mhz will meet and in some cases beat a stock 680.1200 mhz forget it it will leave both in the dust

:heink: I seriously doubt a 7950 will beat a 670 i have two 670 my son has a 7950 his card cannot even beat one of my cards

To put it the short way, if you want better performance for your dollar get the 7950.

If you happen to play a LOT of games that have PhysX and you think it is worth the extra cost then get nVidia.

The 7950 comes with Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite.
The 670 comes with $150 of in-game credit for Hawken, World of Tanks, and PlanetSide 2 ($50 for each game).

IMO the 7950 is a good choice because the cheapest of it's kind with a non-reference cooler is $270. 670 on the other hand (non-reference cooler) is $360. Plus, i could care less about in-game credit and 2 NEW games for an upgrade you would have got anyway is a heck of a deal.

Remember, this is my opinion and nobody else has to share it.

haa :) i think gtx 680 (oc) will get ahead of hd 7950 and 7970 at stock.

Since your a student I advise you to get an i5 instead of the i7 because for gaming they will give the same performance. The i7 beats it in stuff like video editing, file compression e.t.c but not in gaming which uses a max of 4 threads (the i5 has 4 threads).

I would also recommend the 7870 LE because it's performance is close to the 7950 and it's very cheap for its performance (best value card out right now IMO).

Thanks for the feedback ^ I planned on getting the i5, but then I saw the i7 on sale for about the same price so I just decided to upgrade.

haha it seems the answer is the same from other sources, up to me but the amd card has better value.

How does Xfire scale though? If I remember right, two 670 in sli doubles perfomance, but does Xfire work the same?

It's hard to give advise right now, if you plan to go with 1 card. In SLI/CF, it is easier given the latest info.

As far as performance goes, FPS is not the only thing that matters. FPS only tells you how many times a second a frames are displayed, but give no indication at how smooth those frames are delivered. Generally higher FPS means you'll have a smooth experience, but not when some of those frames are barely used.

Watch and read some new info that may matter. Keep in mind, these are done without v-sync on, with v-sync the outcome may be different:

Its cuz I want to keep my options open so if I want to upgrade in the future I can get another card instead of buying a new one.

From the articles it seems that SLI seems to give a smoother result.
hmmm, such hard decisions lol

Hard to tell but in the second video, the 7950 seemed to studder more.

Blind test was hard to tell though, alot of motion to split between two eyes lol.
Left seemed slightly smoother.

To tell, you cannot try and look at both at the same time. You have to watch one, then watch the other on its own. It is too confusing to watch together.

If you watch the blind test, you'll see a definite difference when they turn. When I watch it, the left seems to stutter around the corners, though not necessarily a ton, but when you go back and watch the same sequence on the right, it feels noticeably smoother.

The key is to watch them separately though.

Well since it was a blind test, which is which lol.

Assuming that the left one was the 7970, then both videos show that although fps is comparable to Nvidia's cards, the presentation of what you see is not the same.

That's what I got from your posts lol.

And yes, the point of my post is that FPS is not the only thing that matters.

I can't find the link. Prolly cuz I'm skipping but I'm assuming that left was AMD.

The 670 for 320 is looking better now lol. Since with tax the 7950 would be within 30 dollars of the 670.

If I were you I would get the 7950 unless you intend on doing 3D or if you enjoy physx, or possibly if you are a fan of adaptive vsync.

Yeah, after all this time, I think I'm sick of researching now lol. I think I'll just pick the the 7950.

I don't plan on upgrading for like a couple years so newer cards should be out and sli would be moot anyway.

I want price/ performance so I'll gamble with the 7950 and hope drivers are good.
