So I was planning on buying the Rx 580 2048sp which requires about 450-500w for the PSU. So I saw this PSU that is 550w and 80+ (just 80+ not bronze, silver, etc) it's not true rated so will this be enough for the GPU?

Yes because as long as the components get the power they need it shouldn't be a big deal. However, be careful with the amount of components you are plugging in. For example, if your DVD rom drive, hard disk, floppy disc, etc. all require 300 more watts in addition to the 500 watt GPU, you will have a hard time. Maybe go for a more powerful PSU like a 600 or 700 watt.

What? Nearly spit out my morning coffee

Who has a floppy disk, dvd rom drive or heck even an hdd nowadays?

Even if that was the case for OP they wouldnt be even CLOSE to needing 300W for all of those.. Not true, not true, not true.

To answer OP in the matter, an 580 will use around 180W at full load. As you've not listed your other specs im going to assume generously with a bit of headroom that the rest of the components, fans, hubs etc will use around 250W which equals to 430W.

Meaning an 550W unit SHOULD be ok but as the make and model of the psu has not been said yet its kind of difficult to answer as there are many variables in power supplies. Making it impossible to answer this as an "Yes" or "No" question.

80+ white is ok as it is an efficiency rating but it certainly is not the quality rating of an unit!

Okay listen. I was simply making an example. I know that. And I am aware people dont really use these anymore but I do. My reply still stands.

personally depends on the brand but having just the 80 isnt really a good start.

there are alot of bad power supplys out there and while it may say 550w on the side you can always tell a crap psu by its 12v rail e.g ive seen some shocking power supplys where the 12v rail is only providing 300w.

the 12v rail provides most of the power to your system there are older power supplys that have 2 rails but they can be a pain.
