Hey guys,
I have been meaning to do this for a long time and never got to actually doing it. I want someone to please explain to me what's the differences in routers? What are the categories of routers? How can I know what's good for me? I'm coming off as a noob here but I know quit a bit about PC components and hardware, I have helped tens of people building their PCs to be efficient to their needs and helped quite a few guys on this forum too. I just never got into the networking side of things and I would like to learn. In my opinion it would be better if someone knew what my needs are when it comes to networking and helped me personally through a forum than just Googling a guide about routers 101 or something like that.
In my house we have 3 desktop PCs, a laptop, a tablet and about 4 smartphones using the same Netgear VVG2000 router pretty much at all times. My PC is the only device that is connected to the router directly via a 20 meters Ethernet cable because I never really liked wireless technologies in anything if they introduced a slight latency.
What I already know about routers:
I know the basic stuff, like how to forward a port and how to setup a DNS server just out of recommendations from my friends not because I fully understand what they do, but I really never was interested in all of these things as long as my ISP delivered the commercialized speed that I pay for. I have a 20mb/s down and 1.5mb/s up connection and I can say I'm pretty happy with it.
I play lots of multiplayer FPS games and I usually get about 80-100ms latency in the closest regional servers I can join, which is playable even-though I'm always looking for ways to decrease that ping even with 1ms, and unless there's a better solution to get less lag in games I don't feel the need to get a faster connection.
I always thought the latency in games is highly dependable on upload speed, is that correct? If yes, how much will my ping improves if I get higher upload speed? And for the record, I don't care what the other devices other than my PC receives in regards to speed, I just want my PC to perform as high as it possibly can and if there's a way to even limit the speed my router emits to Wifi devices it would be even better, in lots of cases I'd be dealing with sensitive information that requires a stable internet connection and suddenly my dad takes up all the speed by downloading Windows updates or some useless ***. None of my family members use internet for something other than just regular websites browsing so I don't think they'll care if I limit their speeds.
For example, would it be possible to limit my router to emit 5mb/s down speed to all wifi devices while I maintain a stable 15mb/s when my PC is powered on?
I see a new router coming out every week and I ask myself, what's the need? Do people use these higher end routers for regular use? What's the differences between these routers? Is it just technology advancements to make wireless data transfers quicker or does it also have to do with other factors? Would you guys say I need to upgrade my router or connection and what advantages can I gain from doing so?
