Hi all! First, I have cross posted this with the Unreal NG simply because
there ain't a lot of traffic over there.Hope you don't mind.
I love unreal [original]. I might even be a fanatic. But, I'm, having
problems playing it. I've lived out in the country the past 6 years and have
been restricted to dial-up Internet so I haven't been playing the game much.
Recently though, I got hi-speed [ woo-hoo ]. Alas, I'm still having problems
with the software.
Here's what I am running:
WinME, Celeron @ 525 MHz, 256M Ram, and TNT2 32MV Card. Now, don't laugh -
it serves it's purpose for what I use it for and is a helluva lot better
than the PII 200 with 4 MB V Card I had when I first bought Unreal in which
I played Unreal on daily.
Anyway, it's the video problems that I need help with. When I use Open GL
drivers, not only am I not impressed with the quality, it takes FOREVER to
load. I experience 'Connection Failure' 90% of the time when going on-line.
It's that damn precaching, which I can't seem to find a setting to turn off
(using Unreal 2.25). The moment I spawn, I die and then the connection is
lost. I've tried playing around with the numbers in the Advanced Option for
Network play and have seen some improvement, but I really don't know what I'
m changing-lol.
NO matter, it's the Direct 3D drivers I want help with. When I have selected
this, the game loads fast, the graphics are great, but there is a huge
problem with the fonts. For example, when I Esc to get the menu, most of the
letters are not there. Audio/Video options might appear as: 'Au o i o'.
When I go to the spot that shows the online games, I cannot read the site or
map etc because only a few letters of the line are present. Finally, even
selecting advanced options gives real problems. The Unreal window doesn't
shrink and show the Advanced Options window but rather they appear 'layered'
, like one is in the background and they alternate back and forth to the
foreground in a fast flicker. I typically have to 'Ctrl-Alt-Del'.
This problem has existed for as long as I can remember. Don't even know if I
ever had unreal running properly on this PC- it's been so long.
Here's what I have done:
I've read almost every tweak I can find on-line I can find. No go. No one
has seen this problem.
I have uninstalled Unreal completely and reinstalled.
I have gone back to the original drivers that came with the card (Asus
V-3800 SGRAM) but I currently have the latest drivers installed (3.75) from
their website.
I have tried using nVidia drivers instead, detonator drivers etc and no real
help. The box my card came in says: Asus AGP-V3800 Pro /TVR. It also says it
's a TNT2 Pro. ( Funny, doesn't say if it's SD or SG Ram). I also use 4-in-1
Via drivers for my DFI Mx Board.
I also have some difficulty understanding what driver does what and which
one I need.

What's the difference between a display driver and VGart driver?
Can't think of any other info that might help.
What can I do??!!
Thanks a HEAP!!!
