I have never built a computer before, so this will be my first go around. Honestly, I have no idea what I would need/want, or the level of difficulty of building my own pc, so any advice is extremely appreciated.

Approximate Purchase Date: I want to have bought all the parts and assembled my first computer before August 25. That's when school starts, so I'd like to get this done as fast as possible.

Budget Range: (e.g.: 300-400) I need a monitor, gaming keyboard, and all the parts for around 1500 dollars. Now that budget can stretch, the price just has to be right for the perfomance.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming is number one, followed by video / picture editing, then just basic web surfing/school documents. But honestly, this will be my gaming computer.
Are you buying a monitor: Yes

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: I have amazon prime, so that would probably be my number one, but any site works like newegg. I am 45 minutes away from a Fry's, so I will be able to get some of my parts there if they are significantly cheaper.

Location: City, State/Region, Country - Northeast Houston, Texas, United States
Parts Preferences: by brand or type: Probably will try and stick to an nvidia graphics card and intel processor, as those I have heard are the best from friends and family. If I'm wrong, I will change it.
Overclocking: Maybe - if I have the ability to do so safely, then yes, if it would be hazardous and/or potentially endangering to my pc, no.

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920/1080, or something like that. Need to buy alongside PC.

Additional Comments: Nothing really needed extra. If there is a guide or a site/link I should be checking out, please advise. Very new to this and need all the help I can get.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: This is my current PC

It is a gaming laptop, and is a bit outdated. I did not realize the perfomance boost of having a desktop pc until after reading up on some articles AFTER purchasing this gaming laptop. I bought it for around $800, as I worked at Best Buy for a little while and got a good discount on it. For me to build a pc, I would want it to be signifcantly faster than this pc, as if not the effort will not be worth it.

Thank you for any help y'all, I really appreciate it.

I thought your laptop is already pretty good.

Solution

Hey, thanks for the reply! You really do think so? I have some trouble running higher end games at good frame rates. And for some time this week I have hooked my computer up to my TV through HDMI, and used an xbox one controller to play some games, and really did feel some skipped frames. Given, it is a 60' hdtv, I wish it performed better. I will be playing a majority of my games this way, through controller and that means on a higher res larger tv. That would require more video card power right?

I forgot to mention that in my original post, that probably was a key point, I'm sorry. Do you think it is even worth the time/money/effort to build a pc given I have the one I own? I don't want to be greedy if I already have a decent gaming laptop. I had a summer job and made some good money, so I'm allotting part of that for myself, which will be through either this pc or something else.

Again, thanks for the reply! And the pc part picker list, I really appreciate it. Now, about the building of the pcpartpicker pc, how hard would this be to do? I know a little about building computers, but that's not a lot at all, and would need guides to do it, so I'm just a beginner.

That makes sense, at least what you're saying. However, you plugged it into the TV, so that'll decrease performance. And also, you may want to search up MxM. (You know you can upgrade to a GTX780M, right?) And while your gaming laptop is decent, do you need the mobility or are you looking to dominate in games?

And I don't think it's too hard to build. Most of the time it's just lightly snapping stuff into place, tying cables into place, and screwing stuff on. So not too bad. This'll be even harder to build, but it'll help you with the instructions.

Thank you for the help again! I am not looking for portability at all - the only reason I bought this was because it was cheap and I worked there so I got a good discount on it. I would rather just have a great desktop than a decent laptop.

I tried looking up MxM, but don't know exactly what I am looking at. And sadly no, I did not know I could upgrade to a gtx 780m, I will be looking into that as a viable option in my upgrade thoughts.

Glad to help! Okay, so yes, then you would want a full-fledged computer for gaming instead. That's pretty much Ultra +30FPS and game recording.

And if you want help on MxM, I can give you all I know. Just PM me for my email, and I'll tell you everything plus guides. So I think you should hunt for some $600 to spare, plus time and tools and prepare to void your laptop's warrantee.

Ok that sounds good. I'll send you a PM Now!
