Hi, I know there's lots of questions on this topic but so far I haven't found much specific to what I'm looking for.

So I've had my current monitor for way too long (nearly 7 years old). I've recently built myself a gaming PC with a GTX 1080 which I have plans to possibly SLI in future. Currently my monitor is 1080p 60hz and I'm looking to upgrade, here are some things I am thinking about:

  • Budget of £200 - £400

    60hz - 144hz (opinions?)

    I'm thinking 1440p (not sure about 4k)

    16:9 or 21:9 Ultrawide

24" and above minimum (but would like 27" and above)

No G-sync because it costs too much (unless there is a good G-sync monitor this cheap)

My main worry is that in some games I play like GTA V, BeamNG... my gtx 1080 isn't always capable of 144 fps even in 1080p on ultra settings and I know that with only V-sync and no G-sync, lots of stutter can happen when the monitors refresh rate isn't being achieved. I know this isn't an issue if I do decide to SLI but I'm still finding it hard to make a decision.

I was originally looking at 4k monitors but again I don't know if that's sensible with only one card and it would be 60hz instead of 144hz etc...

Basically I would like some opinions on the ideas I have posted above, ultrawide? 2k or 4k?

Thanks in advance to everyone ;)

Solution
For your budget you would have to compromise between high refresh rate, resolution and g-sync. P.S. YOur links don;t work.
I strongly suggest you top priority to be g-sync. Variable refresh rate is a game changer for gaming (I just bought a full HD freesync monitor since I have an AMD gpu and the difference Is very noticeable)- also I g-sync is a bit more smooth In you scenario this monitor would be the best (but expensive) choice:

Possible (but not ideal)
Asus MG278Q 27.0" 2560x1440 144Hz Monitor (In case you buy an AMD gpu in the future instead of going SLI).
It doens't have g-sync. It has freesync and it's mostly for AMD gpus.

If you can stretch the budget (I consired it ideal choice in your case):
Acer Predator XB271HU 27...

or

Remember that a monitor is a long term investment (even longer than the system you just built so it may be a good idea to not make too much compromises on your purchase). You may regret it in the future.

Another possible solutions:
Asus ROG SWIFT PG248Q 24.0" 1920x1080 180Hz Monitor with G-sync
Fits the budget and very high refresh rate.
or
Asus PB277Q 27.0" 2560x1440 75Hz Monitor (no g-syn/freesync and 75hz)

P.S. You can use DSR on your 1080p monitor if you want.
I only suggested TN panels sinince they are the most responsive for gaming. A fast (but slower response time), quality ips with also gaming in mind is quite expensive.

Thank you for your help, I'm still thinking but I like the monitors you have suggested. Right now I'm trying to decide whether I want a higher refresh rate with the same 1080p res, or if I want a nicer res with the same refresh rate

Glad I could help. Let me know what you decide so I can suggest a few options.

It's been a while since I was here... and I came up with my choice

Acer Predator XB241YU, 24 inch, 1440p, 144 hz, G-sync monitor

Acer-Predator-XB241YU-430x413.jpg

The one in the picture is the 27 inch but I don't think I will have enough money for that one :(

Great Choice!!! However since it is a 1440p monitor I suggest you to save some more for the 27 inch version since that is basically the ideal size for a 1440p screen. But I guess 23.8 inch will also work well.

P.S. You may also wait a bit more and look into a 1440p ips monitor since the colors are much better but for gaming TN is fine, As I said, a compromise should be made. For example, I think movies (especially darker ones) look quite bad on a TN panel.

Thanks :) I will get it soon. But for now I have a new problem I'm about to post a thread on, which sadly will need to be fixed before I buy a monitor
