Hey guys; I'd like to be able to watch up to 4k video over lan on my wifi 6 devices. I currently only have an AC series router and it isn't cutting it; so I want to upgrade to a wifi 6 router.

My main device that holds my videos uses an Intel WiFi 6 AX200 160Mhz dual band adapter.

I'm looking at the ASUS RT-AX56U AX1800 right now.

I've researched the bitrate of 4k video over LAN and have gotten varying information. I'm assuming the info is sent encoded, but I'm not sure so I don't know how much bandwidth I'd actually need for this.

If anyone knows and/or can suggest some products for me I'd be grateful.

Solution
First run a speedtest on your current devices. If you get over 30mbps you likely have enough to run 4k.

Why would you not plug a disk type server into the router rather than running it on wifi.

Wifi 6 is still really new so not a lot of actual consumer feedback. It is likely faster but most problems with wifi are not the speed it is the interference from all your neighbors. Even though wifi6 claims to make that better I just can't see how they do it when the radio signals are actually being corrupted by the signals form outside your house.

Make sure you get the latest patches. A lot of the wifi6 equipment was manufactured before the standard was final so there might still be incompatibility issues.

Your local video source should be wired, IMO. Having WIFI from source and to the client hurts performance. Move your source to wired. You will be able to stream several 4K streams.

Unfortunately wired is out of the question.

Are the asus routers actually any good at all? I mean they look cool and the specs seem pretty good, but I've never used one before.
