Note that I have a very basic understanding of computer parts. A friend of mine built this for me about 1 month ago.

Until today, my PC was functioning perfectly. I primarily use it for gaming, but nothing too intense. I put it to sleep before leaving for work this morning, and when I got home it would not unsleep, and using the power button did nothing. I unplugged it, switched off the power supply, then rebooted. The cathode lights and LED fans lit up, fans spinning, normal bootup sounds, then it turns off (stays on for 1 to 5 seconds). Eventually it stopped lighting up at all. I unplugged everything, tried a different socket, and a different power cord. There are two red lights on the motherboard that usually aren't on lighting up, the CPU LED and DRAM LED lights. After we opened up the case, removed all periphials/moniter and tried switching out parts.
- Removed GPU, RAM, tried a different power supply. It powered up and stayed on.
- Inserted different RAM, same alternative power supply. Powered up and stayed on.
- Hooked my power supply back up, with alternative RAM. Powered up and stayed on.
- Reassembled GPU, plugged in moniter, still with alternative RAM. Began shutting off again, no picture on display.
The whole time, there have been red lights on the previously stated labels. We removed the battery from the motherboard, no change. I'm kind of at a loss because this computer is almost brand new and has been working fine until now. I've opened it up myself and carefully dusted it with an air can twice since I got it, so I don't see debris being an issue. The case is pretty spacious (Antec 900), with 4 120mm case fans and 1 200mm fan on top, and is not in a constricted or hot place, so I would not think its overheating.

Specs:
Hard drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3
Power Supply: CORSAIR HX650 650W
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB
Processor: Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz Quad-Core

My friend who built it was troubleshooting on the phone, and he's worried that the motherboard is bad. Could this possibly be a fluke or is there something I am missing?

If you have the Windows install disk you can put it in and see if it will do a repair of the Windows install.
In your testing what do you mean by power up and stayed on?
If you put the video card back in and it started the shutting down again then it could be the video card or the slot your putting the card into. Try a different slot for the video card to see if it stays on.

I meant that the fans, lights, hard drive and disk drive would turn on and stay on. Otherwise, they'd turn on then off after a few seconds.

I just wonder why the video card hasn't been an issue until now, but I'll try that. I don't think I have the windows install disk but ill look around. Nothing is showing up on my display at all in any of the setups, so I'm not sure how I'd work around that.
